Video of me painting the Early Marksville period (ca. 1-200 CE) Catahoula Zone Red bowl. Since the paint/slip has to be blended into the surface to ensure it bonds & doesn't flake off, the bowl was damp but firm. The paint/slip is a combination of very fine red clay, ground red ochre, water & honey. The honey is an antimicrobial & a binding agent.
And, no, I'm not going to chew the end of a twig to make a paintbrush. Authenticity only goes so far. 2/ #ceramics #archaeology
My Early Marksville period (ca. 1-200 CE) Catahoula Zone Red reproduction bowl that was auctioned off last year. It had a couple of air pocket blowouts but otherwise survived firing, which is good since it was a lot of work. Painting video to follow. 1/ #ceramics #Archaeology
