Forbidden Planet (1956)

A starship crew in the 23rd century goes to investigate the silence of a distant planet's colony, only to find just two survivors, a powerful robot, and the deadly secret of a lost civilization.

This is the OG sci-fi film about a space-faring human society.

Can you really be a fan of sci-fi, if you haven't witnessed Robby the Robutt in all his original cinematic glory?

The movie poster for Forbidden Planet. It is a hand drawn scene using sharp, solid colours and shadows to elicit a sense of dread. Robby the Robot stands upon a red and white planet's surface. His body is silver, but it is mostly obscured in full shadows - with dark red highlights framing the shadows - making his appearance dominated by negative space to hide much of him from the viewer. His limbs are made of bulky orbs, his body boxy; a truly early sci-fi design long before sleek designs became the goal. Several gyros and gadgets adorn his head; some sticking out the side of it, others safely inside of a glass dome. His mouth appears as a row of buttons. Behind him is a fantastical scene of black mountain spires, and black and dark grey planets in the alien sky. A human made dome sits on a hill behind Robby. Bright and cheerful, its yellow exterior seems to escapes all the shadows that are cast elsewhere. In Robby's arms is an unconscious woman Her white skin, blonde hair, and yellow outfit (that looks like a one-piece bathing suit) likewise have escaped the ominous and foreboding shadows.

Watching Forbidden Planet (1956) for the first time in goddess knows how long and 1) amazed by the quality, yet 2) thoroughly creeped out by the vision of a 22nd century utterly dominated by cishetero white American men. Hoping the rapey guy stalking Altaira dies a horrible death in the next 20 minutes. Also hoping there's a subversive critque of this dystopia coming before the film ends. 2001: A Space Odyssey had such a critique. #ForbiddenPlanet #SciFi #JimCrowSciFi

I re-watched the #LostinSpace episode 'War of the Robots' again last night in which Robby the Robot of #ForbiddenPlanet makes his first guest appearance on the series. The mechanism that Robby was playing, they kept on insisting it was not a #robot, but rather a #robotiod. Was this term used outside of ‘Lost in Space’ anywhere? The difference as it was explained in the episode is that a robot is constrained by its programming whereas a robotoid is free to act completely independently.

Robby the Robot from the movie ‘Forbidden Planet’ makes his first guest appearance in the 1966 TV episode of ‘Lost in Space’. In this black and white image from the episode, Robby plays a “robotoid” threatening the B9 Robot from the series on a rocky barren alien planet.
