Annabanana<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/@CaroltheCrone" class="u-url mention">@<span>CaroltheCrone</span></a></span> I&#39;ve been watching <a href="https://c.im/tags/ThreePines" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>ThreePines</span></a> &amp; I&#39;m a fan of the <a href="https://c.im/tags/LouisePenny" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>LouisePenny</span></a> books (I just read <a href="https://c.im/tags/AWordOfCurosities" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>AWordOfCurosities</span></a>). </p><p>Generally I think Three Pines is quite good although I have some minor quibbles. (The first two stories felt rushed although the last story didn&#39;t and I think has been the best one so far. I&#39;ve also thought Peter &amp; Clara&#39;s casting is too young, Jean Guy is cast too old and he should be speaking French only). However I realize that TV/movies are a very different medium than books and every adaptation of a book will have changes. </p><p>I really like <a href="https://c.im/tags/AlfredMolina" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>AlfredMolina</span></a> as <a href="https://c.im/tags/InspectorGamache" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>InspectorGamache</span></a>, he captures <a href="https://c.im/tags/Gamache" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Gamache</span></a> &#39;s compassion and thoughtfulness. I like the indigenous story arc (original to the show) as it is well written and acted. </p><p>Overall, I think it&#39;s a good adaptation for both those who&#39;ve read the books and those who haven&#39;t. (My husband hasn&#39;t read the books and he is enjoying it as well.)</p>
Annabanana<p>I saw episodes 5 &amp; 6 of <a href="https://c.im/tags/ThreePines" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>ThreePines</span></a>, the new <a href="https://c.im/tags/InspectorGamache" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>InspectorGamache</span></a> series today. In my opinion, this is the best story adaptation so far. Unlike the first 2 stories, it did not feel rushed and was very faithful to the book. The characters were well cast and performed. We&#39;re really enjoying this show and especially <a href="https://c.im/tags/AlfredMolina" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>AlfredMolina</span></a> .</p>

Here&#39;s my review of the first two episodes (I&#39;m a fan of the books). I would add that&#39;s the 2 part episodes are a bit rushed as they are doing an entire book &amp; the new indigenous arc in each 2 part story. (IMHO each story should be in 4 parts like some British dramas rather than 2 .) </p><p>Just saw the first 2 episodes of <a href="https://c.im/tags/ThreePines" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>ThreePines</span></a> on <a href="https://c.im/tags/AmazoPrime" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>AmazoPrime</span></a>. <br />Overall, I liked it and but quibbles were minor.</p><p>What I liked:<br />-the casting and performance of <a href="https://c.im/tags/AlfredMolina" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>AlfredMolina</span></a> as <a href="https://c.im/tags/InspectorGamache" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>InspectorGamache</span></a>. He conveyed the thoughtfulness and caring of the character.<br />- the setting and the scenery of the Eastern townships of Quebec were very evocative<br />-the indigenous arc although not a part of the books was well done &amp; integrated with the story. (In the books there is an indigenous mother protesting outside the SQ headquarters.)<br />- many of the casting choices were well done (Oliver &amp; Gabriel), Isabelle (although not indigenous in the books, it worked well)</p><p>What I don&#39;t care for (all of which is minor quibbles)<br />- less French than I thought there should be, if memory serves me, Gamache and his wife speak French to each other, not English. It especially jarred with his deputy Jean-Guy who doesn&#39;t speak English &amp; mistrusts English speakers<br />- other casting choices - the artist couple Clara &amp; Peter are middle aged in the books<br />-Ruth Zardo looks like a bag lady (although she is well played), I didn&#39;t picture her so unkempt</p><p>Overall, I thought it was an excellent adaptation. Annabanana<p>Here&#39;s an interview about the upcoming <a href="https://c.im/tags/ThreePines" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>ThreePines</span></a> series with both <a href="https://c.im/tags/LouisePenny" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>LouisePenny</span></a> (the author of the <a href="https://c.im/tags/InspectorGamache" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>InspectorGamache</span></a> mysteries) and <a href="https://c.im/tags/AlfredMolina" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>AlfredMolina</span></a>. It&#39;s from Le Devoir (a Quebec newspaper) so it&#39;s in French but Chrome (and most web browsers) will ask you if you want it translated into English.</p><p><a href="https://www.ledevoir.com/culture/ecrans/772140/ecrans-three-pines-un-village-si-tranquille-en-apparence" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">ledevoir.com/culture/ecrans/77</span><span class="invisible">2140/ecrans-three-pines-un-village-si-tranquille-en-apparence</span></a></p>

Annabanana<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://mstdn.social/@WinnipegLaur" class="u-url mention">@<span>WinnipegLaur</span></a></span> I&#39;m a fan of <a href="https://c.im/tags/LouisePenny" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>LouisePenny</span></a>. I love all her <a href="https://c.im/tags/InspectorGamache" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>InspectorGamache</span></a> mysteries. (I&#39;m also a Canadian, live in Toronto). I&#39;m looking forward to to the new series <a href="https://c.im/tags/ThreePines" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>ThreePines</span></a>. I hope it is well written, a friend warned me about a previous adaptation. Apparently this one has <a href="https://c.im/tags/AlfredMolina" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>AlfredMolina</span></a> (who&#39;s British in it), I hope his Quebecois accent is convincing. Apparently it&#39;s from the same production company as The Crown doing it.</p>
Annabanana<p>I&#39;m looking forward with some trepidation to Amazon Prime&#39;s new <a href="https://c.im/tags/TvShow" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>TvShow</span></a> series <a href="https://c.im/tags/ThreePines" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>ThreePines</span></a> starting to air in December <a href="https://c.im/tags/ThreePinesOnPrime" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>ThreePinesOnPrime</span></a>. Bad <a href="https://c.im/tags/screenwriting" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>screenwriting</span></a> can ruin a show even with good actors.) Apparently it&#39;s the same production company as The Crown and <a href="https://c.im/tags/AlfredMolina" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>AlfredMolina</span></a> is the lead. (He&#39;s British so probably hopefully he&#39;ll do a convincing Quebecois accent.) The rest of the cast seem to be Canadian (English, French and indigenous - the only other cast member I recognize is <a href="https://c.im/tags/TantooCardinal" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>TantooCardinal</span></a>. )</p>
