Italy bans gender-neutral symbols in schools in latest culture clash

Italy's education ministry on Friday instructed schools to ban the growing use of gender-neutral symbols, saying they were unclear and flouted the rules of Italian grammar.
The move risks exacerbating tensions between the right-wing government, which portrays itself as a guardian of traditional values, and LGBTQ and womens' rights advocates.
"The use of non-compliant graphic signs, such as the asterisk (*) and the schwa (ə), is contrary to linguistic norms and risks compromising the clarity and uniformity of institutional communication", the ministry said in a statement.

Since the Sexual Revolution of the 1960s there's been a continuous fight over the Swedish word "hora" as used by immigrants.

Today its main dictionary sense is "prostitute". But until 200 years ago it primarily meant "woman who has sex outside of marriage", without reference to whether any payment was involved. And this definition, with the traditional value-system it implied, was still strong with several immigrant groups that arrived in Sweden from the 60s onward. 1/3

When I reply in English to a thread that’s in another language (like German), Mastodon assigns my post the language of the thread, even though I’ve written in English and set English as my default.

This means other users (e.g. German speakers) won’t see the “Translate” option, because Mastodon thinks my post is already in their language.

Is there a way to force my posts to always be in English unless I manually change it?

I’m pumped to have discovered “Dreaming Spanish” as a place with lots of content that I can understand. And to be honest, I’m hanging out in the“superbeginner” space. Dreaming Spanish offers exposure to a bunch of dialects.

Argentinian is fascinating. Essentially they say things like “plasha” for 🏖️ and “cabasho” for 🐎? (Ll is pronounced like “sh”.)
I’m still focusing my efforts on 🇲🇽 Spanish to some extent, but this is probably good for the brain.
