.<p>"Propaganda", said Joseph Goebbels, "must facilitate the displacement of aggression by specifying the targets for hatred."</p><p>The British press is currently in a frenzy over the latest instalment of the Harry and Meghan saga: the Netflix Documentary and Harry's book. I am not going to discuss the particulars of that issue here; but would like to comment on the power of the media and the way in which they create images which quickly become embedded in the consciousness of the masses.<br />I have noticed for some time now that the new Princess of Wales and the aforementioned Meghan Markle are portraid as polar opposites by the newspapers, almost as if the Royal Family is a Pantomime or a Disney story in which good is pitted starkly against evil.<br />Whenever I see images or read stories of Kate, the Princess of Wales, she is always portraid as a kind of 'Snow Queen'. Beautiful, dedicated, charitable, a 'perfect' example of womanhood as seen through the romantic lense of a Disney film at Christmas. She is an Ariel, an Elsa, or a Snow White, as seen here in the 1938 animated film.<br />Meghan on the other hand, is our villainess. She is the Wicked Witch of the West, an Ursula, or the fabulously wicked Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty, <br />In reality of course, life is a little more complicated than a simple dichotomy between light and dark, white and black, good and evil. But Pantomime is very appealing to human nature. We like the escapism of leaving the World behind for a couple of hours while we boo the Ugly Sisters and cheer when Cinderella gets to kiss her Prince Charming. The newspaper people know this, and specify our 'targets for hatred'.<br />Whatever the rights and wrongs of the current Royal rumpus, I doubt that Kate is all sweetness and light, or that Meghan is the feminine Antichrist.
