1001 Other Albums
Marvin Gaye – What’s Going On (1971, US)

The spotlight we're revisiting today is number 246 on The List, submitted by me (buffyleigh). This was the 2nd last art spotlight we had from Norn, published last August. This album is sadly still very relevant, the title essentially what my brain screams every day.

Since we already reposted Norn's final spotlight last weekend, this is the last one we'll be revisiting. As Norn would say, thank you for going through this process with me. 💜

To view the whole image, see the full spotlight: https://1001otheralbums.com/2024/08/14/marvin-gaye-whats-going-on-1971-us/

Want to skip straight to the music? Buffy Leigh (she/they)
We have 2 other Grace Jones albums on the 1001 Other Albums list, both added by me, but now I wish I had added this one so that we could've had this piece by Norn on the blog! Their story on this one is super sweet but too long to include in this toot, so I'm going to include it in the reply below.

Grace Jones - Fame (1978)

https://album.link/ca/i/1442869548

#NornCutson #GraceJones #NowPlaying

Buffy Leigh (she/they)
Putting on one of the Dolly albums Norn included in their Record Collection series next, to follow up that wonderfully weird "Walk the Dog" track on Big Science. And, because Dolly!!! By coincidence, I picked the Dolly album that was released the same year as Big Science.

Dolly Parton - Heartbreak Express (1982)

https://album.link/ca/i/667907890

#NornCutson #DollyParton #NowPlaying

1001 Other Albums
Laurie Anderson – Big Science (1982, US)

The spotlight we're revisiting today is on number 114 on The List, submitted by arratoon. This was the fourth art spotlight we had from Norn, published last July. I'm particularly grateful for this one as I was just getting into Laurie Anderson at the time, and getting the spotlight ready cemented my Anderson fandom.

Here's what Norn had to say about this one: "When I came to NYC, I thought life was gonna be nonstop art all the time! I thought you would turn on the kitchen faucet and Laurie Anderson music would come out!" 💜

To view the whole image, see the full spotlight: https://1001otheralbums.com/2024/07/14/laurie-anderson-big-science-1982-us/

Want to skip straight to the music? Buffy Leigh (she/they)
Picked this album to go on after The Velvet Underground, as it's another of the few b&w pieces in Norn's Record Collection series. I don't know if I've ever heard this band - well, collective - before, was kind of expecting industrial, not eclectic ethereal/gothic-y/dream pop stuff. And Kim Deal (on track 6)! It's a double album so I'm only part way through, but so far definitely fits the mood.

This Mortal Coil - Blood (1991)

https://album.link/ca/i/543947061

#NornCutson #ThisMortalCoil #NowPlaying

1001 Other Albums
The Velvet Underground – The Velvet Underground (1969, US)

The spotlight we're revisiting today is on number 898 on The List, submitted by arratoon. This was the third art spotlight we had from Norn, published last June, a few months before the album's 55th anniversary.

Here's what Norn had to say about this one: "Many times, I've taken a vow that I would never talk to anyone who hadn't listened to The Velvet Underground at *some* point in their lives. I've always broken the vow, but it seems like a good guideline. I have no interest in "normalcy", being "accepted" or participating in mainstream culture. I LOVE being an outsider." 💜

To view the whole image, see the full spotlight: https://1001otheralbums.com/2024/06/12/the-velvet-underground-the-velvet-underground-1969-us/

Want to skip straight to the music? Buffy Leigh (she/they)
I've been listening to some albums I've never heard before that Norn had included in their Record Collection series. I picked this one because I loved their tribute art and have always meant to get more acquainted with Sheila E's work. I've of course heard "A Love Bizarre" before, but I should've listened to the full album a long time ago as it's essentially a Prince album. And it turns 40 this year!

Sheila E. - Romance 1600

https://album.link/ca/i/124886870

#NornCutson #SheilaE #Prince #NowPlaying

1001 Other Albums
Kate Bush – The Dreaming (1982, UK)

The spotlight we're revisiting today is on number 576 on The List, submitted by guyjantic. This was the second art spotlight we had from Norn, published last April, and possibly my favourite of the 6. Norn also did a tribute to Hounds of Love and the Running Up That Hill single later in their Record Collection Series. 💜

To view the whole image, see the full spotlight: https://1001otheralbums.com/2024/04/18/kate-bush-the-dreaming-1982-uk/

Want to skip straight to the music? 1001 Other Albums
From Norn's FB page, below is their description of their Record Collection series and beautiful thoughts on the importance of music in their life.

"I knew that I wanted to do a series; something where each piece would lead into the next. I had a fire under me, I didn’t want to sit around “waiting” for inspiration! These images have been stewin’ in my brainpan for almost 40 years! And I knew that it had to be a spiritual series. Both because I had to *MEAN* what I was saying and because I wanted the act *itself* to be a spiritual practice. In a way, I was designing my own Tarot. But it couldn’t be a belief system that I’d only *read* about; it had to be something that had REALLY HAPPENED TO ME. That brought me to the oracle powers of the ITunes™. The Multiverse has messages for you and one of her vehicles is the shuffle function. The Multiversal DJ may not be playing what you *want* to hear, but She’s spinnin’ what you *NEED* to hear! And I realized: MUSIC. Music has really happened to me. I don’t just *believe* in Music; I *KNOW* its real. Music has *changed* my life. I would be nowhere if I hadn’t followed the tangents and adventures that Music has sent me on. Music is so important and powerful for me, I realized if I began a series of all the records that have changed my life, I would have a project that would last me the rest of my days! I am so grateful to all these artists for the inspiration & stretching my imagination, in Life as well as Art!"

#NornCutson

1001 Other Albums
Dusty Springfield – Dusty in Memphis (1969, UK)

The spotlight we're revisiting today is on number 1007 on The List, submitted by Annaspanner. This was the first art spotlight we had from Norn, published last March, and it really showcases Norn's fantastic smile-inducing style. Until a few days ago, this was our 3rd most viewed post on the blog, now bumped down to 4th by Norn's Björk Homogenic spotlight that we looked at again yesterday. What can I say, the Internet loves Norn (and Dusty). 💜

Norn's note on this piece: "Is this one of the most perfect albums in the history of music? mmmm, could be!"

To view the whole image, see the full spotlight: https://1001otheralbums.com/2024/03/20/dusty-springfield-dusty-in-memphis-1969-uk/

Want to skip straight to the music? 1001 Other Albums
Hey all, in honour of Norn, I'm going to repost their other previous spotlights here this week, originally published on the blog last spring/summer.

About a month into the 1001 Other Albums project, I put a call out for guest write-ups, and Norn asked if they could instead contribute by way of art spotlights. I was thrilled at the idea and they immediately sent 6 pieces over, all part of their Record Collection series which they had gallery showings for (under the exhibit name "BOYS KEEP SWINGING") in Brooklyn and the UK and published in artbooks. Norn was an absolute music fanatic, so even though they didn't submit any albums to The List themselves, I consider these pieces as Norn co-signing their inclusion in The List. So, again or for the first time, I hope you enjoy Norn's wonderul art and give the related album a spin in their honour.

Note these earlier spotlights all reference Norn's website that had their full Record Collection series. Unfortunately Norn deleted their website about a month ago (a decision which they immediately regretted :blobsad:), but some of the collection is in this thread: https://neurodifferent.me/@n69n/109614093873417611

Edit: Norn's FB page is still up, and seems to have the full Record Collection series there, with lovely notes to go with some of the pieces. I'm going to include those notes when reposting if Norn had included them (and I've gone back and edited the Bjork and Dusty posts).

#NornCutson

1001 Other Albums
Due to receiving sad news, reposting this spotlight here. This was the last of the 6 art spotlights we had lined up for the project from the wonderful Norn Cutson (@n69n), taken from their Record Collection series which they had previously published as a 2-volume artbook set. I last spoke with Norn the weekend before this post went up, and then didn't hear back from them afterwards, which was strange, they had always reached out after. Unbeknownst to me, Norn left us the same day this post was published, due to the health issues they had gotten diagnosed just before Hurricane Helene hit their home and upended their health care.

Norn was such a beautiful, big-hearted, passionate, and unique soul. I’m so very happy to have met them through this project, and am grateful they shared their art, their talent, and their life with us. Rest in peace, my friend, you are already dearly missed.

https://1001otheralbums.com/2025/02/11/bjork-homogenic-1997-iceland/

#NornCutson #MastoArt

Buffy Leigh (she/they)
I have some heartbreaking news for those who know Norn Cutson (@n69n). They passed Feb 11. We last spoke the weekend before, arranging their Bjork piece to be posted Feb 11 on the blog. I didn’t hear from them after it went up and then noticed a few days ago they hadn’t posted since Feb 10. I just found a post from their sister on FB confirming my fears. Seems they had a medical episode while alone at home. I can share the link with anyone interested, feel free to DM.

#NornCutson

1001 Other Albums
Björk – Homogenic (1997, Iceland)

Our next spotlight is on number 1000 on The List, submitted by dwenius.

Edit: I’m sad to relay the news that Norn Cutson, who had so graciously provided their wonderful album tribute pieces for us to use for a few spotlights including this one, has passed. I had last spoke with them the weekend before this post was pre-scheduled, and was worried when they didn’t respond after it went up, which they always had. Unbeknownst to me, Norn left us the same day this post was published, due to the health issues they had gotten diagnosed just before Hurricane Helene hit their home and upended their health care. Norn was such a beautiful, big-hearted, passionate, and unique soul, and I’m so very happy to have met them through this project. Rest in peace, my friend.

It’s been a while since we last were treated to a piece from our resident artist, @n69n (aka illustrator Norn Cutson). This is in fact the last piece we have from Norn (at least for The List as it currently stands), so I was sort of selfishly hanging onto it, to save for a metaphorical rainy day. Well, no time like the present. Also, I picked today because it’s the 15th anniversary of the utterly brilliant Lee Alexander McQueen leaving us. McQueen designed the satin kimono dress Björk is wearing on the album cover, specifically as per Björk’s request to make her look like a warrior who fights with love, and to reference a photo of model Devon Aoki in a McQueen dress (taken by Nick Knight, who was also the photographer for the album cover). Echoes of McQueen’s collaboration with Björk for Homogenic would then be seen in his collection that soon followed, the A/W 1997-98 “Eclect Dissect” couture collection for Givenchy (who he was the head designer for at the time). I know we’re here for the music, but Björk and McQueen are two of my favourite artists from any medium, and them working together is just one of those moments of absolute magic.

Anyway, the cover tribute seen below is number 28 in Norn’s fabulous “Record Collection” series, which imho further increases the magic of this moment (I, for one, have a print of this piece right by my record player). Make sure you check out their previous spotlights here, as well as Norn’s Redbubble shop to see some of their other work (which includes some other wonderful Björk pieces).

And I suppose I should say something about the music? Homogenic was Björk’s third studio album, and, nearly 30 years after its release, the tracklist essentially reads as a greatest hits list. A departure from the more danceable art pop of Post (1995), this album amps up what Björk and other Icelandic artists do so well, i.e., translating the breathtaking beauty of their country into sonic form. While the album is primarily electronica/trip hop, the real standout features are the gorgeous strings provided by the Icelandic String Octet and, of course, Björk’s inimitable vocals. It’s emotional, it’s dramatic, it’s a pure masterpiece.

If you haven’t heard this album before, you’re in for an absolute treat.

Bandcamp: Björk – Homogenic

Discogs: Björk – Homogenic

#1001OtherAlbums #1990s #AlexanderMcQueen #artPop #avantgarde #Björk #electronicMusic #electronica #experimental #Iceland #ListenToThis #MastoArt #music #musicDiscovery #Musodon #NornCutson #tripHop
