Pamela Merritt<p>Last night I watched the movie Zulu, made in 1964. The movie&#39;s structure is such that it&#39;s 2 hours and 18 minutes long. When does the battle begin? At the 1:06 mark.</p><p>In the _middle_.</p><p>And it&#39;s all chronological, not some kind of adjusted timeline or anything. Plus, this is a realistic tone. Which is why the first half of Zulu is about... waiting.</p><p>Not boring-waiting, but suspenseful-waiting. Soldiers and visitors discuss the situation in what is not even a fort, but a lightly built hospital camp. The prep for the coming battle displays everyone&#39;s character, which is how we get to know them. And we know we&#39;ll miss them, because this is a war film.</p><p>We spend half the movie anticipating, in suspense, while getting exposition through natural dialog. By the time the battle begins, we are fully engaged, simply by being riveted by the stakes, and how alternatives were eliminated.</p><p>If the mere thought of half your work being build-up does not appeal, I understand. But the craft that goes into such a bold move really paid off.
