Adamrabbi
Omg #threepines is such a well made show… I was worried because Louise Penny (whose books I love and I’m currently reading one) said in an interview that she didn’t have much input and the village itself didn’t play enough of a role… but the bilingual actors and the many indigenous actors and the additional of the residential school and indigenous related plot lines are so powerful.

I especially like the #Indigenous story arc (which is new to the show but something #Canadians need to talk about more as it's been a part of our history that has been ignored for far too long. BTW the director who is also the cultural consultant is an indigenous woman.) Loved #AlfredMolina and I thought episodes 5 & 6 were the best so far. (They didn't feel rushed to me where as the others did.)

(The first two stories felt rushed although the last story didn't and I think has been the best one so far. I've also thought Peter & Clara's casting is too young, Jean Guy is cast too old and he should be speaking French only). However I realize that TV/movies are a very different medium than books and every adaptation of a book will have changes.

I really like #AlfredMolina as #InspectorGamache, he captures #Gamache 's compassion and thoughtfulness. Annabanana
I saw episodes 5 & 6 of #ThreePines, the new #InspectorGamache series today. In my opinion, this is the best story adaptation so far. Unlike the first 2 stories, it did not feel rushed and was very faithful to the book. The characters were well cast and performed. We're really enjoying this show and especially #AlfredMolina .

Here's my review of the first two episodes (I'm a fan of the books). I would add that's the 2 part episodes are a bit rushed as they are doing an entire book & the new indigenous arc in each 2 part story. Overall, I think it's good adaptation. I really like Molina as Gamache. He captures Gamache's thoughtfulness and compassion so well. I love that they filmed in the eastern townships (that rural landscape is so Quebec).

The indigenous storyline arc is new but very well integrated with the original story (and Isabella is indigenous).

My only quibbles are minor; there should be more French & Jean Guy shouldn't be speaking English, Clara & Peter should be played by middle aged actors and Ruth looks like a bag lady (although her character's well written & very much like the books.) IMHO, it's well worth watching. It's going to be released as 2 episodes (2 part story), every week until Christmas.

Annabanana
@tashasounart Yes I agree. (I 'm from Toronto but I've been to Quebec & I've known quite a few Quebecers. They included a childhood friend who's bilingual with a Quebecois mom & dad from Ontario, my first boyfriend was a Quebec French speaker from Sherbrooke and a later boyfriend was a English speaker from east end Montreal), most of the public conversations in Montreal, especially at the Surete would definitely be in French and it's the only official language. Feelings still run high about this in Quebec, especially in Montreal because of past history (at one time, the department stores refused to serve people in French.) I don't think most people there switch between especially in public. (Most English people there do speak some French & there were always English people in Montreal, McGill University is English & there's a Jewish community) but the language of business is mostly French (esp since the language laws passed by the PQ in the 70s). I can't imagine much English being spoken by the Surety except when they interview English speaking witnesses/suspects. I've seen considerably more much switching between languages in Ottawa, then I've ever seen in Montreal.

I think that they put more English in the show to appeal to the American & UK market. Apparently #LouisePenny insisted they film in Canada with a largely #Canadian cast & crew but #ThreePines be marketed outside Canada. I've glad they filmed in Quebec, the architecture in Quebec is very different than Ontario or New England and the landscape is identifiably that of Quebec.
