Jonathan Kamens<p>This is your periodic reminder that when posting a link of any sort you should include at least a sentence or two describing what it's about, because many fediverse apps (including e.g. the Mastodon web app) don't display useful previews for many types of links.<br>Be polite: don't make people click through the link just to find out whether they actually care about what's in it.<br><a href="https://federate.social/tags/fediquette" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>fediquette</span></a> <a href="https://federate.social/tags/feditips" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>feditips</span></a></p>
Fishercat<p>Hey, folks who use screenreaders. I often use asterisks and parentheses in my writing, because the structure forms as I write. I've just realized that may make my stuff less accessible for you. </p><p>Is there a different way for me to add short snippets of clarifying text that's more accessible?</p><p>Thanks!</p><p><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Blind" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Blind</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/VisuallyImpaired" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>VisuallyImpaired</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Fediquette" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Fediquette</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Accessibility" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Accessibility</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Community" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Community</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/ScreenReaders" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ScreenReaders</span></a></p>
neatchee<p><strong>FFER</strong> !!--!! Friendly Fedi Etiquette Reminder</p><p>When you are self-replying (i.e. creating a long thread) it is courteous to <em>set the visibility of all self-replies to "Quiet Public"</em> </p><p>Otherwise you will fill the local and federated timelines with individual posts that appear in reverse order. They won't make sense to anyone, due to lack of context, and will usually be split up by other posts on the timeline anyway.</p><p>So add an indicator to the top-level post that you're creating a thread (like the 🧵 emoji or a [1/?] sequence counter) then kindly switch to "Quiet Public" visibility.</p><p>Thanks! :RemHug: </p><p><a href="https://urusai.social/tags/fediverse" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>fediverse</span></a> <a href="https://urusai.social/tags/etiquette" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>etiquette</span></a> <a href="https://urusai.social/tags/fediquette" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>fediquette</span></a> <a href="https://urusai.social/tags/thread" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>thread</span></a> <a href="https://urusai.social/tags/visibility" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>visibility</span></a> <a href="https://urusai.social/tags/QuietPublic" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>QuietPublic</span></a></p>
Job Destroyer<p>PSA: If you're sharing an article from a news site, please copy and paste the relevant *news* of the article or provide a summary rather than just the clickbait title. </p><p>Many news sites are pay-walled or region restricted and so sharing these links without any context, means people open the page, load a bunch of javascript malware into their browser and then close it in frustration, it wastes time and resources. And it makes you, the person who shared the paywalled clickbait, seem less trustworthy. </p><p><a href="https://todon.eu/tags/Feditips" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Feditips</span></a> <a href="https://todon.eu/tags/fediquette" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>fediquette</span></a> <a href="https://todon.eu/tags/news" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>news</span></a></p>

I see the point. There's no reason why we have to mirror all the norms that have evolved from over 15 years of corporate web 2.0. Let's make new norms for social networks. And by the way, start using <a href="https://radikal.social/tags/fediquette" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>fediquette</span></a> for these kind of conversations.</p>

I'm also a <a href="https://todon.eu/tags/noob" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>noob</span></a> so don't tell me to do difficult things on computers please.</p><p>EDIT: please don't suggest me to use another instance/Fediverse platform. When I ask for a Substack alternative, I'm asking for something of that kind, meaning a proper blogging platform with formatting tools and the possibility to send what you write via email. Postcard is the best option for me so far, as you may understand if you read the whole thread. Don't take it personally, it's just a matter of <a href="https://todon.eu/tags/fediquette" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>fediquette</span></a>. This is not Facebook, let's try to be conscious users.</p>
David WBL<p>Thought about the neologism <a href="https://venner.network/tags/fediquette" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>fediquette</span></a> yesterday (in danish: <a href="https://venner.network/tags/fedikette" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>fedikette</span></a> ) for etiquette on the fediverse. I like it. And it turns out it's already a thing, see e.g. this article from '22 <a href="https://aires.fyi/blog/fediquette-mastodon-culture/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">aires.fyi/blog/fediquette-mast</span><span class="invisible">odon-culture/</span></a></p>
David Megginson<p>Is there a way in (Glitch-flavoured) Mastodon to hide all boosts from my timeline?</p><p>I do follow a few people whose boosts are actually interesting (and not overdone), but the vast majority of boosts are just spam clogging my timeline, and I'm getting tired of hiding boosts from one user at a time.</p><p>(Also, fellow fedizens, <em>please</em> stop overboosting. A boost is not a "like.")</p><p><a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/Mastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Mastodon</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/boosts" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>boosts</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/fediquette" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>fediquette</span></a></p>
