t o d d w a r n e r<p>Grammar: the subjective mood …</p><p>"But if she were an imposter, she certainly had me fooled."</p><p>I knew "were" was a correct choice in this phrasing, but I wasn't sure why. Turns out it is called the "subjective mood" and is used in cases where the situation is hypothetical.</p><p>Language is interesting. And hard. I can't imagine non-native speakers teasing out that bit of nuance. Or maybe they can.
