If you're concerned about the direction of Hollywood, look to Rian Johnson. He has some answers. He's making thoughtful, original, high-quality films for a mainstream audience. I explain my thoughts here: https://thepostcredits.substack.com/p/the-rian-johnson-model-for-saving
Each of Rian Johnson’s films has upended genre norms and subverted audience expectations. Along the way, he’s quietly upended the norms of the film industry at-large. Last week I wrote about how @jamesgunn and Peter Safran are challenging the status quo when it comes to how superhero movies are made. Read about how I think they could reshape the landscape here: https://thepostcredits.substack.com/p/bad-movie-fatigue
Tomorrow, I'll be breaking down how writer/director Rian Johnson presents a framework for challenging the franchise/blockbuster complex from within. Keep an eye out!
I wish I could make an advance purchase for tickets to all of Rian Johnson’s future movies. A Rian Johnson subscription box, if you will. Lucasfilm's failure to lock him in for his original Star Wars trilogy while they could should go down as one of the biggest failures in Hollywood history.
