Mark A. Rayner<p>Another lovely review of The Gates of Polished Horn! Raleigh 🌱Oh, Mrs. Danvers-you creepy, creepy weirdo 💀<br> <br> This month, I reread Rebecca, and I think I enjoyed it even more the second time around. I won't wax poetic about it—it's a book that nearly everyone has already read and raved about—but it's beloved for good reason as one of those rare novels that is beautifully written, psychologically intricate, and a real page turner.<br> <br> It's easy to read Rebecca at the surface level alone, as a traditional gothic romance with a great mystery at its heart. And that's not by accident—the entire novel is told from the protagonist's perspective, and we're so drawn into her anxious mind, where imagined conversations and events are as real to her as actual occurrences, that the line between reality and vivid daydream is blurred, and it takes real effort to separate ourselves from her feelings and question her judgment.<br> <br> But when you do, you unearth something else—a macbre tale, full of unlikable characters and moral ambiguity, that explores the complex dynamics of class, gender, and power. There are moments in this book, moral choices made by the characters, that are utterly chilling. It's in these moments that we get to decide—if we're paying attention—what we're willing to justify, what we'll be an accomplice to.<br> <br> •<br> <br> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/rebecca?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#rebecca</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/daphnedumaurier?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#daphnedumaurier</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/literature?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#literature</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/bookstagram?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#bookstagram</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/literaryfiction?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#literaryfiction</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/booklover?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#booklover</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/bookphotography?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#bookphotography</a>
Raleigh 🌱ambiguous, porous, psychologically complex—the bird's nest left me with a deep sense of uncertainty. what was it about exactly—how unresolved trauma can lead to a crumbling of the self? or women's struggle for authenticity in a world where they're forced to compartmentalize the<br> "unfeminine" and unpalatable aspects of themselves? was it a darkly humorous jab at the idea of madness as a female malady or neuroses as a result of (primarily) bad mothering? a tongue-in-cheek critique of the field of psychology itself?<br> <br> the beauty (and horror) of any shirley jackson work lies in the cavernous openings for interpretation she leaves; there's an uneasiness in choosing your own path through the narrative.<br> <br> ultimately, the bird's nest isn't a new favorite jackson for me—there's an insufferable pov character whose chapters were a real chore to get through—but its cryptic nature primes it to be one of those stories that's even more fun to think about after you've finished reading it. and really, everything she wrote is well worth a read.<br> <br> •<br> <br> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/shirleyjackson?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#shirleyjackson</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/literature?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#literature</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/literaryfiction?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#literaryfiction</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/bookstagram?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#bookstagram</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/books?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#books</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/booklover?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#booklover</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/bookreview?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#bookreview</a>

Raleigh 🌱There is a city where fungi threatens to take over, devouring books and balconies and, sometimes, people; where power slips from one hand to the next with the ease of a slit throat, and streets are torn apart by the warring of rival publishing houses; where the subjugated indigenous people—the unsettling gray caps, or "mushroom dwellers"—lurk in shadows and beneath the ground.<br> <br> Ambergris is a city of thieves and madmen, religious zealots and squid worshippers, heretics and historians. A city marked by violence, irrevocably shaped by its early history of colonialism and genocide and seemingly unable to move forward as it refuses to look back.<br> <br> As always with stories this weird, what's perhaps most remarkable is how completely non-weird they are at their core. Sure, the inhabitants of this great city of squalor do participate in a Purge-like event every year called the Festival of the Freshwater Squid (Ambergris predates "The Purge," y'all), but what is this but a twisted reimagining of our own back gardens, the skeletons in our closets?<br> <br> Genre fiction gets a bad rap when it comes to prose, but VanderMeer's language is beautiful. It's that literary stuff —Prose with a capital P. His descriptions of Ambergris are both incredibly vivid and also unimaginable—especially as the trilogy progresses and the city becomes more and more monstrous. VanderMeer loves playing with the limits of human understanding, and some things are apparently indescribable.<br> <br> But despite the occasional, elusive description—and there are far less in Ambergris than in his more widely-read Southern Reach trilogy—there's so much depth and diversity to this world. Not only is Ambergris teeming with different forms of life and centuries of history, VanderMeer also plays around with form in such a way that his books feel like lost artifacts of the city.<br> <br> [Continued in the comments] 🍄<br> <br> •<br> <br> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/books?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#books</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/bookstagram?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#bookstagram</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/bookreview?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#bookreview</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/reader?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#reader</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/literature?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#literature</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/jeffvandermeer?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#jeffvandermeer</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/literaryfiction?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#literaryfiction</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/speculativefiction?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#speculativefiction</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/ambergris?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#ambergris</a>

Raleigh 🌱I read Peace, by Gene Wolfe, back in 2021, and I’ve been thinking about it ever since: cryptic and nightmarish; unreliably told through layers of secondhand story and myth; brimming with unusual imagery, obfuscatory language, and clues buried beneath the surface.<br> <br> Peace is, seemingly, a memoir of a man called Alden Dennis Weer, who travels through his memories as if down literal halls in his home—but the picture he paints of his life is veiled and we have to wonder what Alden is trying to hide from us.<br> <br> Sometimes, I had no idea what I was reading. It's a book that forces you to pay close attention—and even reread it—before you can begin to understand. But it was the power of Wolfe's storytelling, the slow creep of horror, and the excitement of a puzzle that needs to be solved that pulled me in and kept me hooked. I can’t wait to read it again.<br> <br> •<br> <br> •<br> <br> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/books?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#books</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/bookstagram?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#bookstagram</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/genewolfe?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#genewolfe</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/speculativefiction?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#speculativefiction</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/horror?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#horror</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/literaryfiction?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#literaryfiction</a>
