JonobieRandom things I dislike in novels, as I sprint through my fantasy story bundles:Written accents. I like characters HAVING accents, and I love hearing those described (“liquid vowels” or “sibilant consonants” does it for me). But mangling English spelling doesn’t. Teen protagonists. Over it already. The “I thought I was plain but turns out I’m actually the world saver” story line. Yawn. Excessive use of similes. iolaireCutting off funding to the Institute of Museum and Library Services is a personal issue for me. I'm an avid reader, reading 50-60 books yearly. All my <a href="https://masto.ai/tags/reading" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#reading</a> is on the iPhone Kindle app from the three closest libraries via the <a href="https://masto.ai/tags/Libby" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Libby</a> app. That app has made it very easy to manage my holds and loans; overall, it's a great experience. Now that cutting is being cut, I learned it was a project of the federal government via the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

AurélieJ’ai toujours un peu d’appréhension en commençant la suite d’un livre coup de cœur… Surtout quand, comme ici, elle est écrite des années après. Reprenant l’histoire de Nell et Eva quinze après la fin de Dans la forêt, Jean Hegland nous embarque dès les premières lignes dans la tête de Burl, leur enfant. Et j’ai immédiatement été transportée – et bouleversée – par Le temps d’après. Jean Hegland est une merveilleuse autrice, à la plume magnifique et inventive. Ayant toujours vécu dans la forêt avec ses deux mères, Burl a ainsi des mots bien à lui, la vie qu’ils mènent en autarcie au plus proche de la nature les ayant conduits à transformer ou à inventer des mots collant au mieux à ce temps d’après. Ce nouveau langage a du sens et, passée la surprise des premières pages, on s’y habitue très vite, d’autant que ces nouveaux mots sont beaux et nous bercent agréablement, tel le « pop-pop » du feu crachotant, le cocon du « noutrois », les histoires « chutchutées » à la nuit tombée sous un ciel plein d’étoiles. Leur manière de vivre au plus près de la nature est pleine de respect envers le vivant. Reste que Burl, bien qu’heureux de sa vie, a la curiosité des enfants. Lui qui n’a jamais vu d’autres hommes, a soif de rencontrer d’autres gens, de se faire des amis et de partager des histoires avec eux. Et cette envie pourrait bien bouleverser leur petit cocon… Ce roman est juste magnifique. La description d’un simple verger en fleurs a su me tirer des larmes au coin des yeux. Burl, Eva et Nell resteront à jamais dans mon cœur, tout comme la Forêt, ses saisons et les êtres vivants qui la composent. Adam DallianceRead "Not Till We Are Lost", the fifth book in Dennis E. Taylor's "Bobiverse" series.Another great one with the Bobs fighting against a superintelligence, exploring a strange network of abandoned civilizations, studying a species of dragons with stoneage tech, and generally being sarcastic and hip with each other.The universe the Bobs are exploring is getting pretty vast and complicated now, though they still keep talking about the Fermi paradox. Which isn't really a thing once you have actual contact with lots of alien species. Where is everyone? Oh, there they are.Bob was a 21st century geek, and his voice is filled with cultural references familiar to us all. It's not like Ready Player One, which often seemed to just devolve into lists of 80s things, but does make the character/s seem alive and relevant. The characters in Zombie movies often refuse to even acknowledge that they have ever previously seen a zombie movie or use the word Zombie. This isn't like that. It sounded amazing, but unfortunately it wasn't in stock in the bookstores we visited.That didn't keep me from buying books, though! I focused on Irish authors, and one had a cover I'd never seen before.
