Eric<p>Another evening working in the basement on the new mellow song. Comped the two L/R panned backing chorus vocal tracks. Being a curious guy, and knowing nothing about music theory, I wanted to find out why the fifth note up in vocal harmony sounds so good. I just do stuff by ear. So I found a page that describes why: “The fifth scale degree sometimes called the dominant holds the strongest relationship with the melody note or root note of a scale. Fifths support the underlying chords of a song and can help define a key due to their importance.” That’s cool. Eric<p>Down in the basement tonight working on the new song. Got the main vocal comped and now putting down some backing vocal harmony tracks for the chorus sections. J. Jacoby (a person)<p>As a person who has been around professional audio for over 25 years, I very rarely make product recommendations. There are just so many factors on why one product might work better for me than for someone else. There are products that have a better chance of working for someone over another alternative based on technical knowledge and quality of the components.</p><p>All of this to say; my Kali Audio LP6 nearfield monitors, as fed from a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 USB interface from the PC, consistently impress me with how amazing they sound. The sound is detailed yet listenable. The imaging blows me away.</p><p>I don't have a treated room. I have the monitors on stands on my desk about 3' from my ears in a triangle configuration. Eric<p>Jeez, I love learning. I’m actually applying some of the stuff I’ve discovered with recording vocal tracks. Wowee. The first thing I’ve learned is, until all the main vocals are comped, don’t mess with the levels in. This means being able to come back to recording later with the levels right on, exactly the same, if I need to re-track a word or phrase. The second thing is, I now do a lot more takes for the opening words, phrase or verse. I’m often tracking the first verse repeatedly several times throughout the entire song. Then I’ve got some decent stuff to comp from. I gotta get that opening as good as I can with my average vocal abilities. Eric<p>Down in the basement tonight recording a few vocal tracks. Think I’ve got it now.
