Andrew (Television Executive)<p>I've been so busy making toys that I haven't spent much time talking about why I'm making toys. </p><p>I mean, I've spilled a few lines about <a href="https://retro.social/tags/RevolutionaryJoy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RevolutionaryJoy</span></a> but this extends so far beyond just joy. </p><p>And the toys that we're making, basically over night, have gone from feeling like clumsy, hasty knockoffs to professional productions that rival factory output! </p><p>(And they're still made from recycled materials and industrial waste!) </p><p>So let's talk about it.</p>
Andrew (Television Executive)<p><span class="h-card"><a href="https://retro.social/@Username_Here_ASAP" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>Username_Here_ASAP</span></a></span> <a href="https://retro.social/tags/RevolutionaryJoy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RevolutionaryJoy</span></a></p>
Andrew (Television Executive)<p>Oh, one last thing before I hit the sack. </p><p>If you want to watch <a href="https://retro.social/tags/filibus" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>filibus</span></a>, it's up on wikimedia commons: </p><p><a href="https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Filibus_1915.webm" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Fil</span><span class="invisible">e:Filibus_1915.webm</span></a></p><p>I recommend against re-releasing or remixing the above copy if you're worried about copyright infringement, as that one uses a new translation and new inter-titles which are probably under copyright. The original english titles are lost, afaik. </p><p>I'm working on a new new translation ( <a href="https://communitymedia.video/w/nYaqWnn34d57auvQeSE6TY" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">communitymedia.video/w/nYaqWnn</span><span class="invisible">34d57auvQeSE6TY</span></a> ) with cc-by-sa intertitles and a new score, but it isn't ready yet. </p><p>That's one of the projects I want to pick back up in the near future. </p><p>Regardless, <a href="https://retro.social/tags/filibus" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>filibus</span></a> is a <a href="https://retro.social/tags/feminist" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>feminist</span></a> <a href="https://retro.social/tags/skypirate" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>skypirate</span></a> film full of <a href="https://retro.social/tags/airship" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>airship</span></a> shenanigans and <a href="https://retro.social/tags/queer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>queer</span></a> <a href="https://retro.social/tags/romance" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>romance</span></a> <a href="https://retro.social/tags/revolutionaryJoy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>revolutionaryJoy</span></a>. It's also 100 years old, and it was the inspiration for our <a href="https://retro.social/tags/skypirates" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>skypirates</span></a> playset.</p>
Andrew (Television Executive)<p>Anyway, if you're looking for some <a href="https://retro.social/tags/revolutionaryJoy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>revolutionaryJoy</span></a>,</p><p>Sundog and I have built a whole universe of skypirates. We have action figures, we have an in universe newspaper, we have dossiers on pirates that have not been produced yet. </p><p>We have plans for video games (and I thought of a method for building a second today that ... well it's almost too good not to do. If I don't forget, I've probably nerdsniped myself in to it) and I have half a board game finished that I'll revisit soon. </p><p>We have 100+ year old movies, including <a href="https://retro.social/tags/filibus" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>filibus</span></a>, which you must see if you haven't. It's an absolute delight. </p><p>And we're going to make many more things. Maybe more videos, maybe comic books, maybe a short story collection, or even a pulp novel?</p>
Andrew (Television Executive)<p>Alright, talking about <a href="https://retro.social/tags/revolutionaryJoy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>revolutionaryJoy</span></a> and <a href="https://retro.social/tags/skypirates" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>skypirates</span></a> has me back at <a href="https://retro.social/tags/filibus" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>filibus</span></a> and maybe <a href="https://retro.social/tags/gbstudio" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gbstudio</span></a> (sorry for all the hashtags, I want to find this later and I'm too stubborn to install elastisearch.) </p><p>I've been toying around with the idea of making a Skypirates video game. </p><p>I have some ideas and I keep coming back to a couple of different styles but what I really don't have is the time to develop a game right now. </p><p>So </p><p>This is what I'm thinking: </p><p>- I'm going to write the outline for a Skypirates visual novel<br>- I'm going to come up with a list of characters, poses, and backgrounds (for graphics, which I am no good at, so I'll have to commission them) <br>- I'll either whack it up in renpy or find a collaborator or a contract to build the thing.</p>
Andrew (Television Executive)<p>Speaking of <a href="https://retro.social/tags/RevolutionaryJoy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RevolutionaryJoy</span></a> </p><p>I got this in the mail today from <span class="h-card"><a href="https://mastodon.social/@blaft" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>blaft</span></a></span> </p><p>If you aren't familiar with their game, they publish English language fiction from India. Frequently SF, sometimes in translation. </p><p>They're the god damn coolest, and you should give them money. </p><p>This is their anti-caste anthology. Their newest (second newest? I should get the newest newest in the mail in another few days) anthology. </p><p>I am deeply grateful for these folks, I sell a lot of their work at our bookstore, and I can't wait to dig in to this one.</p>
Andrew (Television Executive)<p>I make things! I help other people make things. I let other people help me make things. </p><p>The act of making things is, by itself, radical. </p><p>But I'm trying to take it step further. </p><p>I'm centering my values and I'm focusing on joy, on things that bring me joy, on things that create joy for others. </p><p>I'm focusing on replacing the things in my life, in the lives of other people, that enrich billionaires or promote harmful ideologies or wreck the planet with things that don't. </p><p>This is why I make toys! It's why I run New Ellijay Television.</p><p><a href="https://retro.social/tags/revolutionaryJoy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>revolutionaryJoy</span></a></p>
