Ekrany (Screens), akryl na płótnie, 120 × 100 cm, 2022.

In this painting, I wanted to explore two themes. On one hand, I aimed to juxtapose three types of "framed images" - in the background, there's a window revealing an overexposed image, next to it, an actual painting on canvas in darkness, and in the foreground, two glowing screens. Through this composition, I wanted to highlight the distinct characteristics of these three image types (a meta-painting commentary).

The second theme I wanted to address is the presence of technology in everyday life. In my paintings, I have explored the visual representation of life with computers and in the virtual world. I concluded that the best way to illustrate this was by showing technology's impact on our surroundings and bodies. The painting depicts my brother's computer setup from a few years ago. I remember it with nostalgia. Back then, my brother used two refurbished monitors and a computer that he later gave me when he upgraded to a better one. On the desk, there’s a pair of headphones - the same model we kept buying for years out of habit until they stopped making them. All of those headphones met the same fate - ending up with a broken plug that we couldn't fix because, after replacing it, only one side would work. My brother cut off all those cables and kept them "for later." "Later" came a few years ago when I started exploring technology-related themes in my art. I began attending events with a few of my favorite (headphones) cables tied around my waist as a belt.

I saw a snippet of this display on one of my follows, then I saw one on a podcast.

So of course I wanted one.
Took me a while to google-fu them, it's a #Vestaboard 22x6 electromechanical wall display.
About the size of a medium TV.
These retail for, sit down for the price...

....U$5200

A new sign of a #tech affluence.

Semi-permanence in a digital world of constant change.

So of course, my first thought was... Fuck it, will make one with hookers and blow...

...and blow you will need, individual characters sell for $250.

oh wow this is fun, #Screens for #iPadOS (i also use it on #macOS) has that Screens Connect feature but they also added a #tailscale integration so you get a populated list of your assets in a tailnet. everything in here will be commandeered by your private encrypted backplane.

if you're new to my #householdIT, i use tailscale to bridge two house nets. when i'm out here in PHL, i can still access the filers/media and household #AI back in iowa city. sweet!

also to facilitate cute #automations.

Is there some correlation between dark mode on screens and not being able to see text clearly? I have astigmatism and a few years back, dark mode was a blessing on every screen, big or small. However, now on my phone and small screens text in dark mode feels more difficult to read. Is it a contrast thing? Are my eyes just fucked? Also it seems there are about 99 different implementations of dark mode? Not just for dark black OLED screens. #darkmode #screens #eyes

#Screens "train us in convenience, which is training in predictability, in the facade of certainty. And when that facade inevitably breaks, we often find ourselves at sea.

"In the brilliant and ever-relevant Seeing Like a State, James C. Scott outlines the many ways states fail; principle among them is an obsession with putting things in order, with simplification and efficiency. More often than not, that efficiency translates into brittleness and weakness, into systems so fragile they break the moment something unanticipated arises."
