We used bang (!) instead of at (@). A built-in groups feature is more stable as established instances can host them.</p><p>Today, we have <a href="https://c.im/tags/Friendica" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Friendica</span></a> and <a href="https://c.im/tags/Hubzilla" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Hubzilla</span></a> (as well as <a href="https://c.im/tags/Streams" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Streams</span></a>-based instances) to fill in that, as groups is a built-in feature in those software products. It&#39;s just a matter of finding an instance that&#39;s open to hosting groups for any topic for the ActivityPub protocol.</p><p>That said, any Friendica, Hubzilla, Streams-based instances you suggest for groups?</p>

Made very evident to be important when Google announced the sunsetting of Google Reader. TT-RSS gained a lot of attention as the alternative.</p><p>Another one in the DeGoogle movement was Google Photos (was it called that already?) <a href="https://c.im/tags/MediaGoblin" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>MediaGoblin</span></a> gained a lot of attention as the replacement. (JPope was the most prominent advocate for MediaGoblin.)</p><p>* The use of pseudonyms. It was a huge issue when services like Facebook strictly enforced the use of real names. Parlementum provided a safe-haven in the fediverse for those who needs their <a href="https://c.im/tags/privacy" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>privacy</span></a> through the use of handles.</p><p>I&#39;m sure I&#39;ve forgotten a lot of other stuff of that period. But, it should give you an idea that the fight to take back our [Internet] freedom has been going on for 20 years now.</p><p>If these great people (advocates, personalities, developers, communities, non-profits) gave up the fight, the Fediverse as we know it today would not be here, or might look far differently.
