Swede’s PhotographsCrested Majesty on a Woodland BranchWhen I took this photograph, two pileated woodpeckers (Dryocopus pileatus)—a male and a female—were at the edge of the forest. This image features the male. Nearby, a hawk circled in the air. As I observed the woodpeckers, they seemed relatively unconcerned with the presence of the hawk, continuing their foraging undisturbed.
