The rise of nationalism in Canada deeply disturbs me. Canada is built upon genocide. It profits on the effects of genocide, and racism is systemic in its power structure. @Shanmonster when you say nationalism, do you mean the vocal broad "patriotism" that has appeared since Trump has threatened to invade Canada? Or something else?
@TheresaReason it was always there before, but the whole tariff business has fanned the flames.
@Shanmonster ah. I feel like what's going on now has a different root system than the convoys or the us & them racism built in to so many of our social infrastructure. I deeply hope to we can continue to build on reconciliation and these threats from the US don't distract us from doing the work here. There's actual a lot we as settlers can learn in this moment from Indigenous Nations that are authentically & successfully building autonomous economies and social structures from the ground up.
@TheresaReason every time I see a patriotic maple leaf, I can't help but cringe. The maple leaf is an emblem of colonialism. As Margaret Atwood describes it, it's a blood print from where someone was axed in the snow.
