@jwildeboer I believe the kindle will also read mobi formatted books, so if you convert your books to that format you can still use your kindle to read them (Amazon actually bought one of the original ebook formats - mobipocket - and that format is the format used to build its drm laden now in use).

My first ebook reader used the mobipocket format and I have read those books on my Kindle (circa 2015).
