I just finished Sally Field's autobiography, "In Pieces." She describes how she fought for this role, and how she drew on her own sexual abuse as a child to bring Sybil to life.

Before this, she was still regarded as the lightweight actor from Gidget and The Flying Nun. Field won a best actress Emmy for the role, and broke the Gidget curse forever.

@donaldham Don't forget 'The Girl with Something Extra'. I read that Field was the final audition and they didn't really want to see it - but Woodward pushed for it. I also read a list of potential choices - Patty Duke, Natalie Wood, Audrey Hepburn and Woodward herself (who asked to play the Dr)
