Can anyone recommend any good (preferably open source) journey tracking software/apps? I’m working with a researcher undertaking a canoe expedition and he would like to map his journey in real time, using a phone or smart watch, and embed the map in a web page so others can follow the journey.

@DrKathyChandler I think @owntracks would do the job https://owntracks.org/
I /think/ they'd need to run their own server to display it, but there might be some hosted versions?
@amcewen @DrKathyChandler OwnTracks might well be just what you want, but we don't offer a hosted version for privacy reasons: the "own" in OwnTracks indicates it's your own data or you own the data. :-)
@amcewen @DrKathyChandler we should have also added: the easiest way to get going is certainly using our Quicksetup mechanism: https://owntracks.org/booklet/guide/quicksetup/
Let us know if you get stuck, preferably as an issue on our tracker at https://github.com/owntracks/quicksetup/issues
I used a garmin inreach mini2 when I went down under and since it relies on iridium satelites it works even when there is no cellphone reception.
once you set up an account you have the option of "naming" a website inside the system and hand that out to friends and family so they can follow your tracks.
Has the added bonus of SOS function so with the press of a button you can call help. It is watertight and you can clip it onto yourself anywhere as long as its "seeing" the sky
