Fun lunchtime bike ride despite the egregious parking on the cycle track (I feel like some councillor-bothering may be coming on).
Now that I don’t use Strava thanks to their excitement over AI, I might get a cheap, old-fashioned “bike computer” - I don’t want GPS, phone pairing etc, just a speedo and odometer… does anyone have any recommendations?
Also to buy from an “actual shop” rather than Amazon etc!
Hmm, I really should do that painting of back mudguard I muttered about at Christmas too!
Hi @OccasionalDucks,
Non-wireless Sigma, like model 9.16, do tje job. Just replace the batterie (CR-2032) every two years.
Wireless models tend to losse connection and need two batteries, that don't last as long as on the non-wireless kind.
@Olivier_Aime @OccasionalDucks I got a Cycplus G1 as a Christmas gift and while it doesn't meet your criteria because it's GPS based, another reason not to get it is that it seems to only start displaying your movement after you've been cycling for a mile or so, and sometimes it doesn't even turn on after 2 miles.
@Olivier_Aime thanks, that looks like the kind of thing I was thinking of. Definitely not wireless: “tech that could almost be from the ‘90s”
@OccasionalDucks My old bike computer suffered badly with LED lights, I guess it's radio interference, one light makes it go to 99mph another 0mph. Essentially useless in the dark =D
What I use these days is OpenTracks (and OSM Dashboard) a privacy protecting sports tracker, I don't do anything with the data but it's nice to know I can extract it from the phone if needed.
You'll need an Android phone and the F-droid "store" installed.
Thanks, while I’m definitely thinking “how many times has the magnet on the wheel gone past the thingie on the fork” technology I didn’t know LED lights could be an issue, and it’d be right next to the LED maglight I use as one of my headlights… That said, I don’t do much riding in the dark and maybe I’m not too worried about that - I don’t know. Something to scratch my head over.
@OccasionalDucks Both my lights and my cycling computer were cheapo models, probably not an issue with quality gear.
Also, I presume not an issue with wired bar to fork sensor computers (mine was wireless).
Mostly just wanted to point out you *can* have a tracker app that doesn't invade your privacy.
Personally, my issue now is remembering to start the app before I leave...
Yes, “just doesn’t it without my having to remember to do anything” is also an attraction.
@OccasionalDucks I have a Cateye Quick that I rather like. Nothing fancy, and it has been pretty reliable for me.
The screen isn’t lit, so not great in the dark, but I can still see it.
It was a little fiddly to fit on my #brompton, as the handlebars are thinner; so I have a 3d-printed shim with a small piece of rubber.
@ashok
Thanks, I’ll check it out :-)
