Occasionally something like this comes up as a plot point, like in #StarTrekTMP, at some point Spock realizes V'Ger couldn't understand their signal. (But of course Spock got there first, maybe through the mind meld.) But then the answer was like, "Boosting signal and shifting to the appropriate frequency."
