Hi everyone!
I am a vertebrate #paleontology PhD student at the University of Portsmouth, UK
My research is centered around the #biomechanics and functional morphology of extinct animals.
I study the locomotion of #pterosaurs and #dinosaurs, specifically focusing on the semi-aquatic theropod #Spinosaurus
@stellaludwig Welcome. With my #robotics hat on, I’d be interested to learn if nature has forgotten any interesting #biomechanics as a side effect of extinction. #Robot mechanical design (e.g., for mobility and manipulation) often borrows from nature, but I’ve yet to see anything inspired by #dinosaurs.
@meltedcheese Thank you!
That's an interesting question.
For my research I'll be quantifying the hydrodynamic properties and locomotor #biomechanics of #Spinosaurus using a digital musculoskeletal model, predictive simulations, and then eventually #biorobotics informed by this data.
I'm not sure if the bones of #dinosaurs have made it into any practical applications yet, but there are studies on how #pterosaur bones can inform material design!
@stellaludwig Thanks for the informative reply!
