Two mallards together in a shallow river, facing to the right. The male is standing in the water. He has a yellow beak, shiny dark green head, brown neck, white/grey body, and white/grey/brown back, wings and tail feathers. He has very orange legs. Just beside him, to the right, swims a female mallard. She has a browner body, with spattered dark brown mottling on most of it.

A wood pigeon perched on a branch in a tree preening. It is facing to the left in the picture, and has its head tucked into its body, with very clear white/grey feathers at the back of its head. Its head is grey, and its body a mix of grey, beige and almost blue colouring. Very fluffy.

A dunnock hunting for fat balls among leaf litter. The bird is in the centre of the picture, head turned towards the left. It is rather round, grey/brown, with beak slightly open. Around it is a mass of brown leaves and debris. Behind it sun shines on a red/brown wall.

Branches from a tree, against a white sky, with signs of fresh shoots growing, reaching up. Among the tree's branches, especially at the ends perch numerous starlings. 26 of them can be seen in this picture. There were about 60 starlings that had landed in the tree.

A robin, facing to the left, singing loudly on a wooden fence. It has its beak wide open, above its orange front area, which includes a black flash among it. The rest of its body is a mix of mottled grey colours.

A crow, body facing to the left and head turned away from us, standing with its left foot raised on a hoop'd fence of a playpark. The bird has a glossy shiny back and wings, which are vividly visible to us. The viewer can also clearly see its black wings and feathers.

A herring gull seen from below, flying upwards in the picture, with its wings spread wide. Sunlight glints on parts of its body, with grey underneath, and black and white tips at the ends of its wings. Its tail feathers are white and spread white at the bottom of the picture.

A chiffchaff who was singing loudly, and in this picture is perched on a branch, looking towards the cameraman, with rather a pointed expression. The bird is very fluffy, almost greenish beige in most of its front body on show. Its head is a sort of brownish colour.

I don't know if I ever noticed part-orange house finches in eastern PA or Ohio, but I definitely get them here in Pittsburgh. They make a neat contrast alongside the goldfinches.

A greyish-yellow female goldfinch with striking black and white wingbars perches on the left side of a red-colored finch feeder. On the right side, larger and facing the camera, is a brown-and grey-streaked male housefinch with red-and-orange feathers on his head and chest.

A molting but still bright yellow male housefinch perches out-of-focus on a dead plant at the far left of the frame.

Sometimes things happen fast at the finch feeder.

A female goldfinch looks nonplussed as she perches on the left side of a red-colored finch feeder. On the right side of the feeder, two impressionistic and vaguely bird-shaped splashes of yellow, black, and white seem to indicate one male goldfinch in mid-molt chasing another away from its perch.

Got One

I believe this is a Sandwich Tern (Thalasseus sandvicensis). I took this photograph from the balcony of a cruise ship while docked in Galveston. Although I captured several shots, I initially struggled to identify what I was seeing because the bird's beak appeared deformed. After closely examining this photo, it became clear that the bird had successfully caught a fish.

Black kite in the haze. We've been getting a lot of dust coming off the deserts in China, even way out on Naoshima island in Japan. Annoying and not very healthy, but makes nice dusk
