"We are finally starting to forge a peace pact with nature" said UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres in commenting on the COP15 Global Biodiversity Framework agreed in Montreal.

Guterres announced that he would convene a Climate Ambition Summit next September, and called on every leader to “step up – from governments, business, cities and regions, civil society and finance.”

"We are fighting back..."

UN NewsGuterres announces ‘no nonsense’ climate action summit; calls for practical solutionsThe UN chief said on Monday he was determined to make 2023 “a year for peace” and a “year for action”, highlighting the need for practical solutions to a raft of pressing problems facing all regions of the world.

@VoicesofWentworth I've just published the full text of the Global Biodiversity Framework annex, with an intro and some responses

It is an important start, but far more needs to be done. IMplementation will be key.

This will flow through and impact all levels of government and the Corporate sector in different ways. Addressing the is also addressing the . The need to address is in the text but without targets. I guess they felt that needs to be done with the Global Plastics Treaty being negotiated with a 2024 timeline for adoption. All three Crises are interlinked.

Here is the Earth Negotiations Bulletin report on COP15 for the 18 December that agreed to and adopted the Global Biodiversity Framework.

This plenary started at 2.54am to 4am Montreal time. It is my understanding a further plenary later today will consider further documents to be adopted as decisions of the COP.

@MarkNitrogen
Target 7 important to apply to state of Victoria here in Australia, I think.
I picked up earlier this year hidden deep in the emissions report for the state Government: "The total area of crop cultivation almost doubled, from 1.8 to 3.5 million hectares between 1990 and 2020, while the application of fertilisers increased from just under 50,000 to 328,000 tonnes of nitrogen (an increase of 561%) over this period. "

No explanation why Urea use accelerated so much.

@biffvernon@mastodon.online
is not enough to safeguard according to the science:

Dinerstein et al (2020) “Global Safety Net” to reverse biodiversity loss and stabilize Earth’s climate, Science Advances, 4 Sep 2020, Vol 6, Issue 36, DOI: 10.1126/sciadv.abb2824

"We identify 50% of the terrestrial realm that, if conserved, would reverse further biodiversity loss"

A more recent study identified that at least 44% of Earth's land area—some 64 million square kilometers (24.7 million square miles) requires conservation to safeguard biodiversity. See: James R. Allan et al, The minimum land area requiring conservation attention to safeguard biodiversity, Science (2022). DOI: 10.1126/science.abl9127

should be seen as only a start, not enough to arrest species decline and 6th mass

Well, Negotiators just adopted a major deal in Montreal with the Global Biodiversity Framework aiming to protect 30% of land and seas for wildlife. Decision gavelled not without controversy over the objection of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

Documents adopted as a package:

CBD/COP/15/L25 - Kunming-Montreal Global biodiversity framework
CBD/COP/15/L26 - Monitoring framework for the Kunming-Montreal global biodiversity framework
CBD/COP/15/L27 - Mechanisms for planning, monitoring, reporting and review
CBD/COP/15/L28 - Capacity-building and development and technical and scientific cooperation
CBD/COP/15/L29 - Resource mobilization
CBD/COP/15/L30 - Digital sequence information on genetic resources

I have been following negotiations at COP15 Biodiversity in Montreal the last two weeks with a particular focus on Australia.

There is a deal to be done. Which is good.

But it won’t be ambitious enough to meet what the science says is required.

30X30 isn’t enough. Science says a minimum of 44% of Earth needs to be protected.

I have been posting links on one page: takvera.blogspot.com/2022/12/a

Oxford biology professor EJ Milner-Gulland says on the latest COP15 Biodiversity negotiation text issued by the COP Presidency:
“Although the 2030 goal of ‘take urgent action to halt and reverse biodiversity loss’ is weaker than ‘to halt and reverse’, this is still a strong call to action. I think the main issue is that the can is being kicked down the road. as we are lacking clear targets and milestones for many of the most important things. I also just hope that we get some kind of deal that we can work with, even if it’s imperfect – every deal is a compromise,” she said.

Australian🇦🇺 Pledges relating to Biodiversity.
Yes I have been tracking Australia's pledges at the and now at .

Australia is an important Mega-diverse nation, but with a record of numerous species extinctions over the last 234 years since European invasion, colonisation. Since colonisation, Australia has lost 34 mammals, which is about the same number as the rest of the world combined over the past 200 years. Over 100 species in total. State of the Environment report released in 2022 found near collapse of close to 20 ecosystems.

A Major update to environmental laws have been foreshadowed in 2023, including establishment of a Federal EPA for compliance.

Australian🇦🇺 Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek announces at will host a Nature Positive Summit, a global meeting of the world’s environment ministers and business leaders in 2024.

The Summit will focus on how to encourage private finance for on-the-ground nature repair projects, such as restoring , protecting waterways, and re-establishing habitat for . The Summit will support implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity () and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change () and it will build on Australia’s strong support for the International Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosure (). Australia is working with Pacific nations to ensure strong representation from Pacific region. Host city will be disclosed in coming months.

@groms yes, USA hasn’t signed Convention on Biological Diversity. USA Attending as an observer state. Republicans think signing CBD will relinquish some control. Australia and USA are both mega diverse nations so I think have more to gain being part of the decision making process (imperfect process that it is) for future welfare of citizens and nature.

Perhaps 27 percent of vertebrate animals extinct by 2100, new modelling shows, a great number due to co-extinction. (Extinctions caused by other extinctions) This is the 6th mass extinction event.

"Biodiversity conservation and climate change mitigation really go hand-in-hand," said Flinders University professor Corey Bradshaw (@conservbytes ), one of the authors of the study.

"It also works the other way round: if we save more species, we're going to have more capability in reducing climate change over the next century or so."

Yes climate action, restoring nature and biodiversity and reducing pollution, especially plastics are all interlinked.
