Every morning begins with a song — not from a clock, but from a feathered soul perched against the sunrise.
How lucky we are to wake up to such music. frank.cruz
We had already walked miles in the state park & needed to rest our feet. Thankfully, there are benches throughout the park for tram stops. We weren't ready for the tram; we only wanted to sit & have some water.
What a perfect place for a break, as many Orange-crowned Warblers were zipping around the surrounding trees.

Rio Grande Valley Wild Turkey by Debra Martz
A group of Wild Turkeys appeared out of the trees and tall grass just ahead of us on the trail. As you can see, this one turned and went right back into the safety of their habitat, and all the others did, too.

Plain Chachalaca Not Looking So Plain by Debra Martz
I've seen many Plain Chachalacas while birdwatching in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas, but it was a surprise to see this leucistic one on my last visit in February 2025.

Thrasher In A Tangle by Debra Martz
This Long-billed Thrasher seemed to be in a tangle of branches, limbs, and berries! I wondered how on earth it landed among all this. It was happily perched and singing its song of a jumble of tunes.
I captured this image at the Rio Grande Bentsen State Park in south Texas.

A flash of feathers in the morning mist. This sparrow’s whisper reminds us: even the smallest voices matter in the grand chorus of life.

Night Heron in Morning Light ©Debra Martz
This Yellow-crowned Night Heron was wide awake when I saw it early one morning. Perhaps it was watching the baby alligator below. Interestingly enough, I saw several alligators on this day in Alligator Lake along the Alligator Trail. I wonder how they came up with those names. :-)

I spotted this Ladder-backed Woodpecker up high when I heard it drumming on the tree branch. Woodpeckers peck on objects to create sound patterns as communication, like songbirds use melodies. The tempo, rhythm, duration, and repetition of drumming patterns vary between different woodpecker species.

It's actually the state bird for several US states, including Arkansas, Florida, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Texas, where I saw this one while hiking and bird-watching.

Pretty Mrs Cardinal by Debra Martz
As I walked along the trail, I initially spotted the male, and shortly thereafter, the female emerged just a bit further down.
