Laura is part of a group of federal employees across multiple agencies who were suddenly fired last week due to their probationary status, despite having accepted the offer from a government-wide email titled "Fork in the Road."

... Neither the White House nor the federal agencies have publicly disclosed how many of them were laid off, and within that group, it's not clear how many people were mistakenly terminated despite accepting the "Fork in the Road" offer, which about 75,000 workers did...

Some federal workers have since been contacted by their agencies on their personal email and cell phone, informing them that they still qualify and need to opt-in again by Friday. But they worry that others who were terminated will slip through the cracks, unaware that they can still qualify for the deferred resignation program.

Here's my thought on the #ForkInTheRoad email.

It's a bluff. Legally they can't force the federal employees out and government outsider Elon can't even legally promise that the government will offer them anything. But if they act on what he says, that's technically just them freely choosing to leave. Maybe they can sue him personally saying he misled them, but he has plenty of money to pay for lawyers. #Trump and #ElonMusk are not above this kinda bullshit.

I think that's the plan.

I don't think employees who take the Fork in your eye offer realize you'll get fired for not showing up at work. #ForkInTheRoad not one federal agency has given their staff guidance on these offers. Not one. They won't either. Only guidance is the emails come room a legitimate email address.

The admin so-called that offers 7 months pay to workers that take it, actually has strings attached. In fact the terms are a "deferred resignation" that requires employees to do other tasks if so assigned!

Under the terms of the agreement, which is posted to the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) website, employees agree to resign effective September 30, 2025. Until that date, they remain employees of the federal government but are "exempted from all applicable in-person work requirements." This, of course, is only a valuable concession if an employee is still working. The agreement is called a "deferred resignation,” not a "buyout.” The agreement states that, after accepting the deferred resignation offer, "my employing agency will likely make adjustments in response to my resignation including moving, eliminating, consolidating, reassigning my position and tasks, reducing my official duties, and/or placing me on paid administrative leave until my resignation date." Administrative leave allows an employee to collect their salary while not working. But, as the agreement makes clear, that is not guaranteed. There will "likely” be changes to an employee’s official duties, according to the agreement. But they are still an employee of the federal government and are obligated to continue to fulfill whatever responsibilities are assigned to them.
