I'd forgotten what an enjoyable flick October Sky (1999) was, even though it is a very by-the-book heart-string tugger. Jake Gyllenhaal absolutely nails the part and any time you can get Chris Cooper to play a staunch conservative no-nonsense curmudgeon is always the right casting move. My own older brother was a model rocket nut when he was a teenager (late 60s) so this one checks some personal boxes for me.

Chris Owen (Quentin) and Jake Gyllenhaal (Homer) are in the back seat of a car discussing rocketry. Quentin has the thick glasses that telegraph "nerdy boy" in case the audience hasn't picked up on that. Still from the film.
