OK. Let's talk about #PopeFrancis and than be done with it. I see a lot of positive vibes going around, but please don't exaggerate folks. Although he was quite an improvement over his predecessors, there were still a lot of problematic issues. Especially regarding #women rights and #LGBTQIA+ rights.

Women:
* Abortion is still not allowed.
* Birth control is still not allowed.
* Women are still not allowed to hold important positions in the Catholic Church.

LGBTQIA+:
* Gays and lesbians are still not allowed to marry in the Catholic Church.
* Although he said that gays and lesbians should be tolerated as part of the Church and families, he still didn't accept them as equal. He said people shouldn't condemn or be silent about gays, buy pray for them. What I take as that they are suffering from being gay (or lesbian).
* He didn't accept that children could be transgender. About Transgender and non-binary adults he said the same as for gay and lesbians. So although tolerating them as part of the Church ('all children of God'), they still didn't have the same rights as hetero cis people. He also called gender-affirming surgery 'ideological colonisation'.
* So although there was some progress regarding LGBTQIA+ rights, we are still not fully accepted and treated as 'not normal'.

1/2

I'm horrified and outraged grieving beyond words for the people affected by the recent UK supreme court ruling on transgender rights.

It seems small, a tiny gesture in the face of it all. But if a song helps, this one, "I'll Be Right Here, Too" is a giant F U to the fascists, and a joyous rallying cry for queer and trans liberation.

POPE FRANCIS ON TRANS AND QUEER

"“We must not fall into the trap of being limited by ideological concepts. The family is an anthropological fact, and consequently a social, cultural fact, etc. We cannot qualify it with ideological concepts which are compelling at only one moment in history, and then decline. Today there can be no talk of the conservative family or the progressive family: family is family! Do not allow yourselves to be qualified by this, or by other ideological concepts. The family has a force of its own.” (Pope Francis)

"In short, this is the argument of a man, and a dogmatic organisation, determined to spout its dogma with its eyes purposefully closed and with its fingers in its ears, deliberately blind and deaf to the reality going on in the world around it. “Family is family” is a nonsense tautology and the attempt to perpetrate the idea of “the natural” off the back of obvious historical dogmas that appear and function in particular times and circumstances alone is desperate and pathetic. All this then does, as seen in and through the various missives various Catholic bodies have been pumping out for twenty or thirty years now, is literally demonise “gender” or “trans” or “queer” as things which “annihilate the concept of nature” as one document Butler quotes says. But no one is doing that. Rather, they might very well be suggesting that these things are part of the very same nature – but one that is not phantasmatically shrunk until it achieves a required minimalistic and doctrinally determined lack of diversity."
