HARD TRUTHS is the rare Mike Leigh movie in which the character motivations are opaque and often one-note. I cannot fault the acting. But this is a stunningly lackluster offering from one of our finest filmmakers. One goes to a Mike Leigh movie for the feels and the emotions here are either forced (one long crying scene) or absent. It is too crammed with subplots that go nowhere and doesn't seem to know what it's about. A surprising misfire from a genius.
