An NVMe drive is giving me 700% faster performance than my previous SATA SSD drive

I just upgraded my main boot drive on my Linux desktop, from a 120 GB SATA SSD drive to a 500 GB NVMe SSD drive. Whilst it is true the Crucial CT120BX100SSD1 SSD was not the fastest SSD around, it shows a rating of max of 6Gb/s through the SATA inte ...continues

Benchmark results for a Samsung SSD 970 EVO Plus 500GB, showing read/write speeds in MB/s for various tests in KDiskMark.

From a different point of views and the fact that one can host a Server on any machine.

Components or machines should avoid as many parts as possible from big tech Bros. That means all for recommendations before should be ignored.
AMD instead of Intel and Nvidia is more compatible with Linux as it supports it.

I'll keep my current stuff as it does not make sense to throw functional parts away, but I'll consider this on next sets.

What do you think?

followup to this #XPS 13 issue: user error!

I installed an M2 2280 #nvme disk in an M2 2280 #SATA slot. what was especially perplexing was it was usable post-boot just fine? could install operating systems, read, write, etc

replaced with the correct drive type and now it boots fine #solved

I've never been fond of #JMicron #USB bridges! #SATA or #NVMe! (#ASMedia ain't much better?)

It's just a pain in the rear to pull #SMART reports off the drive!

NO, i friggen DO NOT WANT TO fumble around with "-d", and quirks, and shiz!

Tools on friggen #Windows (#CrystalDiskInfo) CAN DO it, so SHOULD smartmontools on #Linux, automatically!

(back in the 480mbps USB 2.0 days - things were BETTER - current #Linux code hasn't caught up)

…or is it #Firmware?

So #NVMe drives are just sticks , yes ? So the obvious simple easy thing would’ve have been a couple of front case external usb like ports to stick them in for easy swaps and upgrades, yes ? No . Too easy. Still not a thing. Innovation can’t be that simple. No one should have such thoughts. Especially not design engineers

I know it's a first world problem, but what should I do with NVMe drives of 500GB capacity that I've replaced as part of a server upgrade?

Doing 1TB in a RAID0 for backup doesn't make sense (too small, and I already have an on site backup solution).

Donating is my default, but I'd rather repurpose... but for what purpose?

This year, I'm making a bigger move to escape surveillance capitalism by transitioning to @QubesOS full-time.

My laptop has two drives with the internal drive running Debian and the NVMe drive running Elementary. I plan to replace Debian with Qubes while keeping Elementary.

Qubes uses compartmentalization to isolate tasks limiting data exposure and reducing risks of breaches while its integration with @whonix improves privacy

Over the coming months, I'll focus on learning how to use Qubes effectively and improving my operational security practices.

This is part of my effort to reclaim control over my data while improving my privacy and security
