blog.archive.orgDWeb and Digital Rights: A Report Back from RightsCon in Taipei | Internet Archive Blogs

Last week, I joined 3,200 digital rights activists, tech policymakers, researchers and co. representatives in Taipei at #RightsCon.

Doge's budget cuts were a big topic of convo.

But something else kept coming up: it’s not just the funding cuts that's presenting "existential challenges" to tech + rights, it's that the USgov has gone from taking the leading role in supporting an open/safe internet to leading in dismantling it.

MIT Technology Review · At RightsCon in Taipei, activists reckon with a US retreat from promoting digital rights By Eileen Guo

Post-#RightsCon25 event with @au: “in #Taiwan, all the candidates running for mayor that had an #OpenGov / collaborative governance platform were elected, and those who did not were not elected”.
“Young people, who don't have age to vote nor resources to impact their community, feel a lack of agency and that makes them fall victim to technology like #TikTok. We are thus changing the education system to bring more agency.”

A report and open letter was released at #Rightscon2025 yesterday, as an outcome of a workshop co-facilitated by Pyrou Chung, Nina Sangma and yours truly at the Asia Pacific Feminist Forum held in Thailand in 2024. #Rightscon #APFF2024 #APFF24

About to begin our #RightsCon25 session about "Cross-Border Data Flows and Connectivity in Conflict Zones: A Role for Satellite Internet?" We'll be speaking about #LEOs systems such as #Starlink and #OneWeb - and what role they can - and can not - play in conflict zone. Looking forward to a great conversation!

Excellent #RightsCon panel, "Rethinking human rights journalism in the polarized world" featuring 4 incredible and influential women:
•Hanna Song, Database Center for North Korean Human Rights
•Denise Dresser, Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México
•Nataliya Gumenyuk, The Reckoning Project
•Angelina Kariakina, Public Interest Journalism Lab (Ukraine)

What key human rights and tech concerns do local activists in East Asia have?

> Hear their voices in our #LocalSoundBites from Taipei.

- In our first episode, we talked to Mallie 謝莉君, from Taiwan-based organisation Feminist Leadership and Mobilization on the Edge.

"We have many cases of tech-facilitated gender-based violence in Taiwan. Since 2021, the government started investing resources in this area, after pressure from civil society."

Interesting discussion about issues with consent in this panel "Exploring the relationship between privacy, data protection, and democratic rights" - I don't think issue is consent, however, so much as manipulation or circumvention of consent and lack of transparency, deceptive patterns.
