Taking a Stephen King horror short story and turning it into a goofy comedy is an unexpected choice, but you know what, “The Monkey” pulls it off. It’s a gory, funny, good time.

It does have a fireworks factory problem, though. How do you make a horror movie that repeatedly mentions a horror-themed amusement park and then never shows it? That is a miss.

Stephen King is right. #TheMonkey really is batsh*t insane. While I personally didn't find it too engaging, I do respect what the film is trying to do. It's a movie that takes risk, even if it results in divided opinions. You may or may not enjoy it, but the film will surely stay with you.

Movie Review: The Monkey

It’s like if Final Destination met Fear Street but campier. Like if Death was actually a monkey and the filmmakers knew how ridiculous that sounded and rolled with it.

The kills were great, the ending was great, everything was camp galore. But there’s no fucking plot.

Was it about a dad reconnecting with his kid? No, he pushes his kid away every chance he can get until literally the last scene.

Was it about revenge against a brother? Maybe, but if so it didn’t add anything to the movie. Hell, maybe he didn’t want revenge but just to reconnect.

Was it about… I don’t know, there’s really no other plot options. All I could tell you is that it’s about a monkey (don’t call it a toy) that randomly kills people in Final Destination like fashions.

And honestly, the tone was so spot on that I almost didn’t care about the lack of plot. Almost.

What starts out as a bloody and rather silly horror comedy loses its way in the second half as the narrative falls a little flat and it gets a bit samey. A stronger cast might also have helped as star Theo James feels overwhelmed here in dual roles. But the film offers plenty of violent, gore-soaked fun for fans of horror comedies assuming they don't have sky-high expectations. 🤔

HubPagesShould I Watch..? "The Monkey" (2025)With some heavyweight horror names behind it, you'd expect this goofy indie effort to be a class act. Benjamin Cox thinks it's more of a clown - still scary but will probably make you laugh more.

Calidad/tiempo: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

The Monkey

Written and directed by Osgood Perkins; starring Theo James, Christian Convery, Colin O’Brien and Tatiana Maslany (1h38m)

After their father’s disappearance, twin brothers discover a disturbing monkey toy among his belongings.

Loosely based on a Stephen King story, the film blends very graphic horror with a self-aware sarcastic tone.
The result is a jubilantly parodic horror comedy propped up by unique double performances from its leads.
