Use hashtags to help people search for relevant posts AND write them using camel case (that's when you capitalize each word for easier readability: #CamelCase vs #camelcase)

A "favourite" is a "like," and is only visible to you and the OP. They don't affect any algorithms, they simply make people happy to know you saw and appreciated their post. So don't be stingy! Make it rain!

A "boost" is a "share," and they help others discover new people to follow. If you see a post you think others would like or benefit from seeing, boost it! This is how we connect across instances.

Try to be considerate with content warnings and hiding sensitive images. If your post contains a potential trigger, make sure people have to opt in to see it.

Now, you may want to follow me if you like: books, cats, dogs, learning interesting things about funerals and dead bodies, weird and unusual stuff, cars, and memes.

I found a historic photo of #JohnMastodon! Here he is leading the #TwitterRefugee flock during the Great #TwitterMigration of 2022. Such a hero.

My #Mastodon impressions so far:
I picture Bird Site as a massive (and inexplicably sticky) sports stadium in which millions of people are screaming and raging at each other despite ostensibly being on the same team.
Meanwhile.
Mastodon comes off as a quirky coffee shop, lined with bookshelves, fireplaces, and cozy nooks. People meander through and catch odd phrases that rise above the general murmur. “I love that thing too!” they say as they are welcomed into an open comfy chair and easily join in the conversation, as if they’d been there for decades. Everyone has a cat in their lap.

Helpful tip for #twitterrefugees that are finding their timelines a little tiresome at first, while building out their follow lists…

You can follow hashtags and they will populate in your timeline. Thus, your feed will be instantly populated with topics that interest you. For example, #foodie #politics #christmas #movies

The evolution of a new #twitterrefugee on Mastodon:
Day 1: Ugh, what’s up with this? This definitely isn’t Twitter. I don’t get the appeal.
Day 2: I mean, it’s okay. Nothing that great about it. Maybe I’ll keep it. Hopefully something else comes along.
Day 3: Hey, I found people I followed on Twitter! Like, alot of people!
Day 7: This place is like a yoga retreat, but informative. And upbeat. Why did I take a beating so long on Twitter?!?

Seeing a lot more news organizations starting to join Mastodon. Something that previously kept me from fully leaving #Twitter, because that’s how I digested my information. A sigh of relief (after deactivating my Twitter) seeing them joining here now.

well, since pretty much every #twitterrefugee here seems happy finding more friendly and human environment on mastodon - where are the vile and nagging ones then? did they all remain with musk and trump? would make sense and yet, sounds too good… just wondering.

Welp, the #Twitter era is over for me. Officially scrubbed the account today. I think I'm finally following enough content creators here, that I can get the news/information I previously used Twitter for. And immediately felt lighter after hitting the deactivate button. #twitterrefugee #twittermigration

Mastodon searches on hashtags, so any posts you want to be findable, put in appropriate hashtags.

And as a tip, if you want your Twitter pals to find you, make an introduction post where you use your Twitter handle as a hashtag. That way, anyone who's looking for you, can find you just by searching for your Twitter handle (in hashtag form).
