Yes they are.
They stem from the Greek idiōtēs = a private person, an ordinary person, one who holds no public office or has no professional knowledge. And the root of that is idios = own, private.
Is it just me or does that sound like not an insult?
It’s amazing how English has got it completely backwards, whereby those holding public office are now the idiots (/snark)
The second half of idiosyncrasy also stems from the Greek synkrasis = a mixing together. Idiosyncrasy is your own private recipe.
