#WritersCoffeeClub How do you handle foreshadowing? How do you navigate building up to the ‘big reveal’?

In longer stories I use multiple viewpoints and one viewpoint may hint to what may happen later to another viewpoint character. But sometimes trying to add foreshadowing may end up looking rather clumsy. And too preditable stories are boring anyway.

#WritersCoffeeClub 28: Accompanies you when you write?

Zipola. Not even a plant.

I suppose if I happen to be writing in my office, we could count the anime wall scrolls and the small Magical Lyrical Nanoha shrine.

But in general nothing around me is interested in my writing process.

Do you think it is ok to switch in a series from 1th person POV to 3th one, between books?

For more clarity: The first book in my series is in 1th person POV (of Mia). Now the second part/book I want to write from Daria‘s POV, but because of her personality now I struggle with this style. 3th person could be a better fit here.. But I don’t like to be so inconsistent.

Arr. I don’t know. Help😅

#WritersCoffeeClub March 29. How do you handle foreshadowing? How do you navigate building up to the ‘big reveal’?

I am a discovery writer, and I tend to be a world-first writer, not a plot-first writer. I don't think I do big reveals.

I don't entirely write sequentially. If the story decides to take an unexpected turn, I try to make sure during editing that there is a foundation for it established ahead of time, so the readers will understand how things connect.

Usually through conversation. I know my characters very well and they talk normally. Things are revealed through that. When I spot a trend then it will end up with a reveal. You could say reveals grow out of foreshadowing.

As a serial, though, sometimes foreshadowing is weak. I know generally where things are going, but not specifics, especially with character drama.

Building tension is not my strong suit

#WritersCoffeeClub 28 March: Happy Respect Your Cat Day! Who or what accompanies you when you write?

One of our 4 feline flatmates is usually close to where I work. Often it is the silver one we got from a German-Russian animal-help organisation after the start of Russia's war on Ukraine. She came to Germany with 26 others after it became impssible to get the donations to the shelter in Russia. We collected her there and now she lives here with us 2 humans and our 3 other cats. #CatsOfMastodon

We haven't had cats for many years. Sometimes I do miss having a furry companion, yet it's also nice not to have the responsibility and the worry, for example when they're not well.

Instead I have a couple of desk companions, Owl and Bee. They just quietly keep me company and they know not to disturb me. 😄

My dog Jerry is still going at 16 years old. He sleeps in my office while I write and edit and generally follows me around the house.

We also had a cat but she passed away several years ago. She would keep my lap warm, but she never really cared for me.

Behold: Nyx! After several tries I managed to get a decent picture that shows a cat, not a featureless black silhouette. It even shows her constellations if you zoom in enough.

I had a smaller cat some years ago who would lay on my lap between me and the keyboard while I typed, but Nyx seems to think that my hands are not allowed to move for anything except scritching her.

Honestly, just my laptop, Miss Sakamoto. And she's not really "accompanying me" so much as "necessary for me to do any real writing" (aside form the voice memos I mentioned yesterday, which can only go so far).

So, really, nothing and no one. I'm kind of solo that way.
