Two young men are thrown together on a space voyage full of mysteries in “The Darkness Outside Us” by Eliot Schrefer.
#SciFi #MMRomance

Ambrose wakes up on board his ship, and is told by the craft’s AI that he was injured during the launch and has been in a coma. He remembers all his training for this special mission to rescue his sister, who was sent to see if Saturn’s moon Titan could be colonized, but he doesn’t remember getting on board the ship or the accident that apparently injured him. There’s something else that’s concerning: Ambrose’s ship has been joined to another craft, that of his country’s primary competitor, and that ship is occupied by another spacefarer, Kodiak. The two young men must work together to unravel the mysteries and contradictions that seem to cloud their real mission.

5 stars from Digitally Lit for Hope of the Wasteland!

"I absolutely loved this book and fell in love with Huey because of his courageous attitude and how he did not let his anxiety win. I liked how this book made Huey change. His character changed from being a small, timid and anxious character to a strong character in the end.

Overall, I absolutely loved this book and really hope there will be more books to come in this series.

Digitally LitHope of the Wasteland | Digitally LitWhat's scarier than a post-apocalyptic wasteland? 12-year-old Huey is about to find out. It’s been two weeks and Huey’s father still hasn’t returned from a supply run to the Square. His dad’s Number One Rule is posted on the wall of the bunker where they live: “HUEY DO NOT GO INTO THE WASTELAND ALONE” – and Huey has no desire to break the rules because that might set off his anxiety. But he’s running out of food... and what if his father is in trouble? It’s time for him to take action.Huey sets out into the wasteland on a dangerous adventure where he'll face new challenges like mutants, giant scorpions, and most intimidating of all: a feisty, pre-teen girl named Hope.***Hope of the Wasteland is perfect for kids who love science fiction, books that are funny, books about the future, and tween books for boys and girls. Adults can enjoy this book too. It's for kids ages nine and up and everyone who likes a good science fiction adventure story.

I recently read the graphic novel I Shall Never Fall in Love by Hari Conner @hari. I enjoyed it! I felt like it was a realistic portrayal of how queer and other marginalized identities could fit in its Regency setting. I particularly liked how it also included race and class issues. A great bonus was the addendum with sources for further historical reading and preparatory sketches from the art's planning stages.
