Until today, I didn't know trout eat mice.

I long ago came to believe that in the interest of mental health, everyone should have a specific obsession firmly in place: some mindless eagerness so compelling it seems to eminate from the universe at large rather than your own hyperactive brain.

It's an odd fact of life that whichever the side of stream you are on, two-thirds of the best water is out of reach on the other side.

When my wife (and my back) say it's time to get rid of the hand winch on the boat trailer and replace it with electric winch, well... it's time to do that.
Reminding all tomorrow is #FishingFriday . It's the perfect day post a fishing photo, comments, question, and stories. Your preferred fishing method, or species doesn't matter.
Catch and release is encouraged.
Stories must contain a minimum 25% truth.
Absolutely superb day yesterday for the first outing of the year. A 14" and 15" largemouth bass. Both released.

Water Temp: 51 f

Caught on shallow a diving crankbait.

Some fishing trips are a big deal and we wouldn't have it any other way, but fishing your home water isn't exactly a special occasion. It's not that you don't care (if you didn't always care, you'd find another sport) it's just that if you don't get some today, you can get some tomorrow or next week.

Skirted bass jigs with a plastic trailer are a great all around lure for fishing the bottom. I prefer to try them this time of year when water temps are 50 f or less, moving them slowly, waiting for a "thunk" as opposed to a tap.
Tires 6 years old or more? It doesn't matter hold many miles are on them. Be safe and replace them.
If you get a little sick or slightly injured, but you are not actually debilitated, you simply suck it up and keep fishing, usually out of stubbornness than actual bravery.
.... [fishing while sick or injured] although none of it is fun, is discernably better than not fishing.

I stumbled upon the Orvis Store on East Ontario Street in Chicago. They are hosting fly fishing trips to Belize or Montana.
Rods ranged in price from ~ $250 to ~ $1250. Lots of clothes too, but no flies.
Chatted with the sales guy who also loves John Gierach's books.
There are only three places in water you'll find fish.
The top of the water.
The middle of the water.
The bottom of the water.
The bass fishing club that I belonged to would kick off the fishing season the first full weekend of April. We'd head to central Illinois lakes looking for a little warmer water and theoretically better weather.
I fished on a snow covered boat deck more than once.
[My uncle] taught me, for example, not to pay attention to lures that were well stocked, regardless of how pretty they were or how hard the sales pitch, but to always ask what hung on the empty pegs. The ones that were sold out were the ones that caught fish.

If you are one of those who keep a cheap rod in the car for emergencies (not exactly a throwaway), you may eventually learn that the relative snazziness of your tackle doesn't have a whole lot to do with how well you fish.

You're expected to progress through various stages of enlightenment from lots of fish, to big fish (releasing them all, naturally), until one day your pure soul finally leaves the physical plane altogether in a flah of blue light, leaving behind nothing nut a pair of singed hip boots.

I knew the guy was catching fish, becuse he'd wave and grin. The guy who *isn't* catching fish just shrugs

Wake board boats with ballast chambers and downward thrust motors?
Yeah, let's tear up the lake bottom.
Every good fishing camp has a good camp dog. I think it's a law.
Their jobs include greeting boats when tieing up, checking out the catch, bear alarm, jumping in the water for no reason, going cabin to cabin to look in the windows to see if anyone is there, begging for something to eat if someone is inside, and pushing in the door and sleeping in the cabin if they feel like it.
