"Down by the River" is a song composed by #NeilYoung. It was first released on his 1969 album with #CrazyHorse, #EverybodyKnowsThisIsNowhere. Young explained the context of the story in the liner notes of his 1977 anthology album #Decade, stating that he wrote "Down by the River," "#CinnamonGirl" and "#CowgirlInTheSand" while delirious in bed in #TopangaCanyon with a 103 °F (39 °C) fever.

1000 Day Album Challenge (#2) Neil Young: Decade (02.01.24)

that perfect feeling when time just slips away between us on our foggy trip…

so my 2024 begins. I’m drinking coffee and listening to Decade by Neil Young for the first time in ages. I’ve spent my music listening life as a serious Neil Young fan and this is how it began. Decade was my introduction.

I clearly remember first listening to this with Jeff Cohen, my best friend in high school. I think he had it on cassette, but I could be wrong about that. I’m sure I bought my vinyl copy sometime during college.

compiled by the artist, himself, Decade covers Neil’s career from Buffalo Springfield through Long May You Run (Stills-Young Band). unlike many a “best of” / “greatest hits” compilation Decade works as an album primarily due to the idiosyncratic nature of Neil’s selections. it doesn’t hurt that the five previously unreleased tunes rate as pretty good or better.

I appreciate Sugar Mountain’s first appearance on an album. I feel like it took me a while to realize that prior to this it had only been available as the b-side to The Loner in 1969. listening to Decade was also how I first encountered Cortez The Killer which on any given day is my favorite song ever.

when he followed this up with his tour de force, Rust Never Sleeps, I was sold for life. to my taste, Neil is along with Al Green and Van Morrison, the Greatest Musical Artist(s) of the 1970s.
