THE STAVES
"WAITING FOR THE JOY"
Mastodon Post

Waiting for the Joy
by The Staves

thestaves.bandcamp.com/track/w

This vocal group is new to me in 2024, though Bandcamp does show 2022 releases. It seems to me I have bought every track offered except for maybe one. My best guess is that 2024 offerings are bringing The Staves more airplay here in the United States and a growing following. So far, this has seemed to be a Five Star vocal group.

THE MONALISA TWINS
"FOR WHAT IT'S WORTH"

For What It's Worth
from MonaLisa Twins play Beatles & more by MonaLisa Twins

My music collection includes several versions - usually faithful covers - of Buffalo Springfield's classic "For What It's Worth." This performance by the MonaLisa Twins is my favorite of them. The Twins are REALLY good at what they do.

Thoughts on Elgar:

- I'm not sure that I will be able to get past the imperialist absurdities of the masque to give "The Crown of India" a fair hearing.

- I would count myself lucky if I were never to hear any more "Pomp and Circumstance' ever again.

- the cello concerto never fails to move me.

- I love the Sea Slumber song from "Sea Pictures".

Of course there is so much more to Elgar, but I just wanted to get these thoughts off my chest.

THE DAVE CLARK FIVE
"COME HOME"

I recall really liking "Come Home" when it was new. There is no telling, either way, how well remembered it is today.

Garage rock legend Nancy Neon once wrote a highly flattering review of a late Mike Smith concert. I think she got it right. Smith was the group's lead singer and keyboard player.

HELP! SOUNDTRACK
"THE BITTER END / YOU CAN'T DO THAT"

The Bitter End - You Can't Do That by 「Help!」

Most Beatles reissues have been UK versions. So, it seems possible that a lot of music fans may not have heard of this track from the United States "Help!" release. The US version had a few instrumentals. "The Bitter End - You Can't Do That" is the only one that, to me, seems especially interesting.

Track 10

I searched Bandcamp for this great song by Richard and Linda Thompson and found this recording instead. It is quite good.

Three word review: I bought it.

When Alistair Anderson played the Chelsea House in West Brattleboro, Vermont, in the 1970s, during a performance of a Scott Joplin composition there came a crack of lightning. Anderson made a crack of his own, something to the effect of it being a warning for playing a Joplin rag on an English concertina. That concert was terrific. I bought this track, from a recent release, as the best available way to reminisce.

The Beach Boys did this with five voices and as many and diverse instruments as they wanted, while the MonaLisa Twins performed the same arrangement with two voices and two guitars. I admire the MLTs big time for pulling this off so well.

"When I Write the Book" is one of Nick Lowe's best known songs. Personally, I like this late live version better than the original by Rockpile.
