YourLocalCinema - captioned. #Captioned #Cinema

yourlocalcinema.com/explain.ht

I'm a fairly recent UK based hearing aid wearer and have only just discovered, through chatting on lemmy, that cinemas can, and sometimes do, show films with subtitles.

This is some explanation:

I finally tested it successfully:

"Substital" is an add-on for Firefox and Chrome that allows you to display captions / subtitles in nearly any video that you can see on a website, either by searching for it on OpenSubtitles or by loading a caption file from your device locally.

This way you can, for example, watch an old show's episode on archive.org and add a local SRT file so the video gets captions.

Everyday InAccessibility - Today: Robin

"My partner and I are an international #deaf couple. We want to enjoy movies together, each with #subtitles in our own language. But it’s much harder than it should be.

🎬 Cinemas don’t offer dual subtitles, so we rely on technical solutions. Yet, the few available tools are often faulty, not cross-platform, or simply unreliable.

🫠 Why is it so difficult to learn languages and enjoy movies together, accessible?"

Oh oh oh... listen to this one.

I watched Hjem til jul (Home for Christmas) when I lived with my ex-wife. The audio is Norwegian, but since my ex-wife was watching too, the subtitles were in English.

Then I rewatched recently. I decided to put on the bokmål subtitles. (Bokmål is one of the Norwegian dialects.) I can understand some bokmål, but not a ton.

Then I thought about it more. I'm done with Bandidos, but I don't have another series with decent Spanish subtitles... except that Hjem til jul does come with a ton of other subtitles than bokmål or English.

I look, and yes! There's Latino-American subtitles.

So now I'm watching it with the audio in Norwegian and the subtitles in Spanish. It is a little weird, but it works.

:madjoy:

So... I'm working, and my bf is watching a show on TV. I have my headphones on to listen to music.

I glance at the TV, and I see Spanish subtitles.

:catthinking:

I take my headphones off, and I ask, "Are you watching a show with Spanish subtitles? You don't speak Spanish."

He goes, "Am I? [Fiddles with the settings.] I knew something was off."

I go, "Are you high?"

He goes, "I feel very called out right now."

:madjoy:

It’s already been a year since my wife and I have visited #Chile - first time in South America for both of us. Many treasured memories were made, especually thanks to the friendly people and breathtaking scenery. I tried to #vlog a bit, but true to the rookie I am, I missed to capture a lot of the good stuff.

Anyway, give it a look if interested! English #subtitles are available as usual.

Hey #FFMPEG users! I know you can specify extracting #subtitles by language with a command like:

-map 0:s:m:language:eng

But how do you specify by FORMAT or CODEC like VTT/SRT?

I have files with english SRTs and english PGSes and I want to specify eng lang but not #PGS. Currently I know most of them are PGS as #subtitle index 2 so I do:

-map 0:s:m:language:eng -map -0:s:2

and that works, but I'd much rather something like:

-map 0:s:m:language:eng -map -0:s:m:format:pgs

Ideas?

Only 2 #Oscar nominated movies in this year's list of nominees for #BestPicture remaining to be seen.

#ImStillHere (2025) and #EmiliaPerez (2024). Both #ForeignLanguage films that will require my attention in order to read the #subtitles.

Tried finding a #streaming source for them but couldn't find any. So, I'm going to have to watch them #OnScreen.

"I'm still here" will be playing at my local #AMC on 2/7 & I already bought a ticket to see it.

"Emilia Perez" is playing at what seems to be random locations for just a few days at a time all over the #SFBA. The best time/location for me to see it is in #WalnutCreek on Feb 25th which will still be before Oscar show this year on March 2nd.

So, I should be able to see all 10 films nominated for Best Picture by then.🙂

"I'm Still Here" has gotten wide praise from the critics but "Emilia Perez" has been almost universally panned & I hope it's not as "bad" as they say it is.

With the same sentiment as "You know what really grinds my gears" meme

I always watch movies with EN subtitles, and original voice. And most of the time this happens

- [Speaks in "other language"]

Then you switch to the "other language" subtitle and there they are displayed in plain sight.

WTF, WTH whyyy uuuuuuuuu.....?
