"Mannish Boy" (or "Manish Boy" as it was first labeled) is a #bluesStandard written by #MuddyWaters, #MelLondon, and #BoDiddley (with Waters and Diddley being credited under their birth names). First recorded in 1955 by Waters, it serves as an "#answerSong" to Bo Diddley's "#ImAMan", which was in turn inspired by Waters' and #WillieDixon's "#HoochieCoochieMan". #MannishBoy features a repeating #stoptime figure on one chord throughout the song.

No clue how I ended up here, but this is a clip of Bo Diddley recording vocals with a Japanese band called Bo Gumbos

"Love Is Strange" is a #crossover hit by American #rhythmAndBlues duet #MickeyAndSylvia, which was released in late November 1956 by the #Groove record label. The song was based on a guitar #riff by #JodyWilliams and was written by #BoDiddley under the name of his wife at the time, Ethel Smith; it was recorded by Bo and #BuddyHolly, among others.

1000 Day Album Challenge (#81) New York Dolls: New York Dolls: (1973) [21.03.24]
when I say I'm in love / you best believe I'm in love / L-U-V!
if you are or have ever considered yourself a punk rock fan and don’t know the Dolls then you have a lot of catching up to do. the Dolls were a bit too early for the scene at CBGBs that was ground zero for the birth of the punk rock movement, but they are still very much an essential band on that musical continuum.
in a sense they were the Rolling Stones of punk rock before it even existed. David Johansen and Johnny Thunders were the crossdressing versions of Mick and Keith. whereas the Stones began with a near slavish devotion to the blues and Chuck Berry the Dolls touchstone was the Girls Group sound of the sixties filtered though their outer boroughs trash aesthetic.
in addition to their own songs, they transform Bo Diddley’s little known Pills (1961) into their very own. I don’t think I knew Pills was a cover until much later. I doubt I heard the Diddley original until his Chess Box compilation was released in 1990. I fell in love with Bo Diddley during my college years, but I think one would have to be a Bo Diddley obsessive to prefer the original.
debut albums has become a bit of a theme here. It was not my intent when I started this project to focus on debut records but it’s where we’re at. New York Dolls is one of the very best and not to be missed.
I have three absolute faves – Personality Crisis, Looking for a Kiss, and Trash. as the times have changed they have each graced MixTapes, Mix CDs, and playlists I’ve made.
for fans, I would recommend Personality Crisis: One Night Only, the David Johansen documentary, directed by Martin Scorsese and David Tedeschi. Mary and watched it about six months ago and both enjoyed it.
#OTD in 1979 The #GiveEmEnoughRope tour played the Ontario Theater in Washington DC. Uk based band #TheClash brought along one of their heroes, USA rock n roll progenitor #BoDiddley as opening act. The #WashingtonPost #reviewer hoped #PunkRock Could Be As Fresh In Its Old Age As Bo Diddley's songs, dancing and strutting that withstood a a quarter century of #RockHistory
TOM RUSH, CLUB 47
Back in the ‘60s there were a lot of coffee houses in the greater Boston area, but what made the original Club 47 the flagship of the fleet was that they not only hosted the young, local folkies (myself included), but also brought in the legends! You could sit in this little 80-seat room and listen to Maybelle Carter, Flatt & Scruggs, Bill Monroe. And they hosted Sleepy John Estes, Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters and many more of the blues icons.
What was even more amazing was that the legends were (mostly) friendly people!! You could go up to them and ask, “How do you do that thing you do?” and they would show you! There was a lot of amazing back-and-forth between the generations.
I acquired the Club 47 name around 1986, when the original coffee house had been closed for about 18 years (it closed in ’68 and a year later the location became the Passim coffeehouse — genetically unrelated but hosting the same kind of music as the 47).
I had started doing shows at Boston’s Symphony Hall in late December, between Christmas and New Year’s Eve, in 1982 if memory serves. They always featured guest artists and around ’86 I decided to do a three-night Club 47 reunion. My lawyer asked if I had permission to use the name, I said I wouldn’t even know who to ask. He got back to me in a few days and said the name was “unencumbered” and suggested I “encumber” it. So we got a Trademark and Service Mark.
I’ve since done Club 47 shows all over the country, including at Carnegie Hall in New York, the Kennedy Center in DC … on and on. And, I’ve tried to keep the Club 47 shows true to the spirit of the original coffee house, featuring established artists mixed with really talented newcomers, coaxing them into interacting and playing with one another. And each show is one-of-a kind — I’ve never repeated one yet.

Favorite Club 47 Story of the Month:
Two guests at one of my Symphony Hall Club 47 shows (1986?) were Bo Diddley and David Bromberg. It’s not widely known, but Mr. Diddley was an accomplished violinist. He borrowed David’s fiddle and David borrowed Bo’s bright red, rectangular electric guitar, and they’re backstage just before the show goes up — jamming Hava Nagila to the Bo Diddley beat!
