A U.S. House subcommittee has called the chief executives of the nation's two largest public broadcasters to Capitol Hill to testify on Wednesday, with an eye to wiping out the federal funding their institutions receive.
"Do you like being shackled and strip-searched? Absolutely no judgment if so, but anyone who isn’t into that sort of thing may want to avoid a holiday to the US at the moment. Although I’m sure I don’t need to tell you that. Unless you’ve been hiding under a news-blocking rock (in which case: what’s the address? And can I join you?), you’ll have noticed that Donald Trump’s America hasn’t exactly been rolling out the red carpet for visitors. There have been a number of recent incidents where white westerners – people who aren’t normally targeted by overzealous US immigration authorities – have been detained, deported or denied entry for obscure reasons.
(. . .)
But not even keeping quiet about Palestine will protect you. Fabian Schmidt, a German green card holder, was recently detained and 'violently interrogated' by US border officials – who reportedly forced him to strip and take a cold shower – for reasons that aren’t clear. Heck, you’re not even safe if you’re an American citizen. Trump recently threatened to send anti-Tesla protesters to a notorious prison in El Salvador. I used to joke about getting deported, but it’s not really something to laugh about any more – it’s something to have an emergency plan for."
@LorenzMeyer Jain.
"In recent weeks, airport Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents have drawn public outcry for denying travelers US entry based on searches of their phones. A doctor on an H-1B visa was deported to Lebanon after CBP found 'sympathetic photos and videos' of Hezbollah leaders. A French scientist was turned away after a device search unearthed messages criticizing the Trump administration’s cuts to research programs, which officers said 'conveyed hatred of Trump' and 'could be qualified as terrorism.' As the administration ratchets up pressure to turn away even legal immigrants, its justifications are becoming thinner and thinner — but travelers can still benefit from knowing what are supposed to be their legal rights."

@dshan @SrRochardBunson The official “#border zone” in the US is 100 miles from the border— which includes airports with international flights (ports of entry). #ICE and #CPB have broad discretion within this zone and routinely get away with actions that ordinarily police would not.

@jeffjarvis since #CPB can deny entry at will with no recourse even with a valid visa, I'd never do that!
@Mik3y @samhainnight @karlauerbach @alex_p_roe @Nonilex not to mention all the #GAFAMs and #TechBros who get to know that #CloudAct means they'll have to integrate more #Govware #Backdors and enable #BulkSurveillance or get shut down & jailed faster than they can say #EncroChat or #SkyECC...
@markmccaughrean they don't even need to take your phone - they get all the messages [even before #CloudAct] by #StasiBook directly, and then deny entry on the spot.
This is beyond…
#LeMonde reporting that a French scientist traveling to Houston to attend a conference was denied entry to #US after a #search of his #phone & #computer revealed messages critical of #Trump's #science cuts, "which [says #CPB] conveyed hatred of Trump & could be qualified as terrorism". Computer confiscated.

The crux of the R E Burke (who is scheduled to be released today or is already) is that they used a website that matches travelers to free lodging in exchange for chores. The CPB/ICE is cracking down, saying that such arrangements require work visas. Be careful when traveling to the USA.

@Sustainable2050 they have already been used in the past, including private messages, as #NSAbook / #StasiBook does forward them automatically to #ICE & #CPB.
Refusal to decrypt storage and provide access to accounts can lead to being rejected at the border and being denied entry with no appeal possible!
Tough, but fair.
Mankiewicz regarded Rockefeller as an uptight snob. She “didn’t care about radio,” he said later, adding that she was overly enamored of more glamorous public television. Rockefeller regarded Mankiewicz as a Hollywood blowhard. When she backed increasing the broadcast time of a favorite PBS news show, The MacNeil/Lehrer Report, from a half hour to an hour, the NPR chief, in a comment mocking what he regarded as the show’s self-importance, cracked, “I thought it already was an hour.”

@RYStorm #FunFact: neith a #Visa nor #ESTA are legally binding towards the #CPB officers.
This alone is a reason why I'd not enter tue #USA, because they are know th actually flex it against trabelers who did nothing wrong!
Burke was "detained" by ICE at the CAN border.
"This is the 3rd prominent case of CBP & ICE getting unusually & unnecessarily aggressive with foreign tourists, refusing to take the common sense approach."
-A Reichlin Melnick
"Becky has been caught up in the recent #immigration crackdown in the US. What was meant to be a life-changing 4-month backpacking trip has turned into a nightmare."
CBP & ICE are targeting non-criminals.

@gleick sadly this isn't new.
According to @AuswaertigesAmt, the #USA is the only nation known (only 2 have it in the books: USA & Japan) where having even a #Visa does not guarantee border control lets one enter and it's in the sole discretion of said #CPB agent if and for how long they allow.entry with 0 recourse or option to appeal against it.
