“If Nye Bevan was turning in his grave during the Blair years, it won’t be long before he goes full Lazarus & rises up [..] to chase Keir Starmer through the streets of Whitehall”

“Rachel Reeves is planning the most destructive round of austerity cuts since the peak of George Osborne’s austerity mania, but the government & the #Guardian are keen to pretend that her agenda isn’t more of the same austerity madness”

Anyone who thought #Labour might help is deluded….
The UK’s relative child poverty rate is higher than in any EU or EFTA nation bar Greece.

resolutionfoundation.org/publi

On present policies and we project that UK child poverty will rise over this Parliament from an estimated 31 per cent in 2024-25 to reach 33 per cent by 2029-30, its highest rate since 1998-99, and the highest number of children on record, at 4.6 million. This includes £3 billion of scheduled welfare cuts.

This shower of sh!ts is using hungry children to make a point. Breakfast clubs are a step in the right direction (so underfunded, some heads refuse to take part), but removing the 2-child benefit cap is THE most effective way to reduce child poverty. It will cost only £3bn. Weigh that against the billions Starmer promised AI.

The latest report from the Women's Budget Group suggests a key way to help reduce child poverty is to focus on the plight of their mothers.

It then makes a number of suggestions for policy areas where impediments to mothers' raising their income could be targeted, including:

better rural public transport;

removing welfare & benefits' disincentives;

cutting ties to partners' benefits for women recipients; & of course

universal free childcare;
