Kalevala : juhlalaitos
Sami Makkonen on Suomen merkittävimpiä sarjakuvataiteilijoita. Hän on kuvittanut muun muassa Deadworld-sarjakuvia. Kotimaassa hänen tunnetuinta antiaan on Kalevala-tulkinnan lisäksi sarjakuvat Hevosjumala ja Sielujen kutoja. Kalevala : juhlalaitos sisältää aikaisemmin ilmestyneet Kalevala- ja Kalevala : Sampo -sarjakuvat. Tämän seurauksena albumi on massiivinen, liki 300-sivuinen opus. Vaikka kirjalla onkin kokoa, on kokonaisen kulttuuriperinnön taklaaminen yhdellä albumilla […]#Kalevala Day wouldn't be complete without Sibelius!!
Jean Sibelius: Lemminkäinen Suite, Four Legends from the Kalevala | Turku Philharmonic Orchestra
Today is #Kalevala day.
As such, I thought it would share my Kalevala-themed #linocut prints from 2020.
There's the swan of Tuonela, who swims on the black river, which is the gateway to the world of the dead.
There's Otso, the bear king of the forest.
And there's Ikiturso, a mythological sea monster.

Happy #Kalevala Day!
Yes, the Kalevala is the #Finnish national epic. Fifty #poems of heroes, monsters and a fishbone harp. But what if it's not just that? What if it's also a sculpture or a pair of socks?
Many years ago I earned a crust teaching European cultural history, and this #filtrit video on the Kalevala as an idea or a process is one of the leftover thoughts from that time that I never really got to explore properly before - so what better time than today!
@TOrynski I never viewed Väinämöinen as a hero but more like, well, a dick. Finns don't like happy stories.
But hey, I'm no expert.
Anyway, when is it #Draumkvede Day? #Kalevala
Ilmarinen the Smith Goes Courting
Ilmarinen the Blacksmith never grew tired of hammering. One day, as he was putting some iron in the forge, a maiden came to his smithy. She stood upon the threshold and called out to the Blacksmith: “If you knew what I have to tell you, Ilmarinen the Blacksmith, you’d not put that iron in your forge.”
Read the whole #folktale, which is inspired by #Kalevala, on this #KalevalaDay.

This blood has cosmogonic proportions!
'Rushing like a foaming river,
O'er the berry-bearing bushes
...
There remained no single hillock,
Which was not completely flooded
By the overflowing blood-stream,
Which came rushing forth in torrents
From the knee of one most worthy,
From the toes of Vainamoinen.'
So, the Old Man has to travel place to place bleeding across the whole landscape until eventually in Runo 9 he finds an even Older Man from before the age of Iron who knows how to staunch the flow of blood
All because a Maiden on a said NO!
#Kalevala Runo 8
But on the third day, spirits Hiisi and Lempo come to the Maiden's aid, turning Vainamoinen's , blade and handle, against him:
'From the rock the axe rebounded,
In the flesh the steel was buried...'
in his knee, in his toes
'In the flesh did Lempo drive it,
To the veins did Hiisi guide it,
From the wound the blood flowed freely,
Bursting forth in streaming torrents.'
The Old Man tries to utter incantations for healing the wound but can't think of any words for the origin of iron
'which might serve to bind the evil,
And to close the gaping edges
Of the great wound from the iron'
