It just feels like (hear me out) - someone at #Hasbro / #WOTC was told "If we give players Crappy Cake, then they won't like it but they'll think Some Cake is better than No Cake, so will keep giving us money for the Crappy Cake. We just have to create a minimum viable Cake. It'll print money!"

Then after more than a year of #Hasbro and WOTC trying to ~CRAM CAKE INTO EVERY GODDAM THING~ and Players still saying "No. Thanks!" They've finally given up.

RIP Project #Sigil

Gizmodo · Report: Hasbro Is Scrapping Dungeons & Dragons's Ambitious Virtual TabletopProject Sigil, which has been in the works for years, has purportedly seen active development ended after 30 employees were laid off.

This article shows us how utterly clueless Hasbro was in regards to the Sigil VTT.

While everybody expected Sigil VTT would make its money through endless stream of micro-transactions, Hasbro apparently thought a VTT was like a regular GI Joe action figure toy -- once you design it, you can have money rolling in with no additional cost or effort.

When they finally learned that's not how VTT works, they lost interest. 😂😂😂

Wizards of the Coast has laid off over 90% of the team working on their virtual table top.

Guess challenging owlbear, roll20 and foundry wasn't so easy after all, huh? I see this as a win for the #ttrpg community overall. Sorry for the laid off workers though. Hope you find new and brighter opportunities soon!

Bell of Lost Souls · D&D: WotC Just Laid Off a Major Chunk of Its Virtual Tabletop TeamAccording to a Linkedin post from a now-former developer, approximately 90% of the team working on D&D's "Sigil" have been laid off.

Anyone that decides to take a job with Wizards of the Coast should always have a plan for what happens when they unexpectedly (or during holiday season, expectedly) fires them. Because they will fire them. It's inevitable. If the salary they offer isn't enough to allow you to create a rainy day fund, don't take the job.

At this point, it's like smoking and cancer. It's no longer hidden. Everyone knows it happens, so if it does happen, you won't get nearly as much sympathy from the masses. #WotC

I'm disappointed that we didn't get to continue working toward the full experience that we imagined, but happy for the opportunity to work on an intriguing challenge with so many smart and dedicated folks. I wish my former colleagues success in their future endeavors. I'll also be pulling for the crew left behind who'll do their best to keep improving and iterating the experience we shipped last month. If you're interested in talking with me about opportunities in game design, narrative/writing, or team leadership, reach out. Be kind to yourself. And if you can, be kind to someone else today too. | 14 comments on LinkedIn

"Cocks uses artificial intelligence tools to generate storylines, art, and voices for his D&D characters and hails AI as “a great leveler for user-generated content.”

[...] believes the technology will extend the reach of Hasbro’s brands. That could include subscription services letting other Dungeon Masters enrich their D&D campaigns, or offerings to let parents customize Peppa Pig animations."
