One of the favourite lessons I've learned from my reading of popular #biology reporting is that there are no provisional or transitional species. Every single population that's ever lived on this planet looked like that because it was pretty good for an ecological niche at that time. Archaeopteryx was not a weird transitional being or a false start. It was an almost perfect archaeopteryx that must be judged on its own merit. There has never been a better archaeopteryx since then.
