FEATHRUARY 2025

Finally, my favourite birb art challenge #feathruary has begun! 😍 Stay tuned for 20 birbs, 5 each week, to brighten the dull month of February!

Each week has a theme and each day has a prompt where you can choose a fitting birb for yourself. I just love the balance between theme/prompt and freedom that Feathruary gives us!

Day 1: Monochrome
-> Hawaiian Coot

Known as "alae keʻokeʻo" in Hawaiian, this cutie is endemic to Hawai'i and has a lot in common with its "sibling", the American Coot - they are roughly the same size (33-40cm or 13-16in) and the same weight (700g or 1lb9oz).

You can encounter the Hawaiian Coot in habitats such as freshwater lakes and marshes, as well as coastal saline lagoons. Unfortunately, due to habitat loss, the species is considered "Vulnerable". Measures are being taken to preserve their nesting areas, so let's hope the best for our little feathered friends!

FUN FACT
When first discovered, the Hawaiian Coot was mistaken for a Eurasian Coot (which, fair, they do look very similar); today, it is regarded as either its own species or a subspecies of the American Coot.

“The New River is an artificial waterway in England, opened in 1613 to supply London with fresh drinking water taken from Chadwell and Amwell Springs near Ware in Hertfordshire, and later the River Lea and other sources.”

The New River is still in use today, transferring around 220 million litres of water per day — 8% of London's total use. I went for a walk along a section of it. This is an Eurasian Coot.

American Coot paddles around in chilly water near Mount Pinos. This species is also known as the Mud Hen - and loaned its name to the Detroit Tigers’ minor-league baseball team, The Toledo Mud Hens.

Two friends got married at the Mud Hens’ home, Fifth Third Stadium; their invitations looked like baseball tickets.
